Not super familiar with new monitor technologies, so I'll ask. OLED monitors are more susceptible to burn-in, correct? My intended use is for a work, displaying a mostly-static window layout for 40-50 hours per week. Should I be looking at VA or IPS instead?

Depends on how bright the windows are, how much they (and their content) move, and how long you leave the display on. A lot of burn in tests will run screens constantly and see elements like news channel logos and chirons which are always present in the same position burn in. I've had Alienware's AW3423DW QD-OLED since release and I game on it 20-30 hours a week in addition to programming for work (switching between slack, IDE, zoom, browser, etc) and have no signs of burn in with normal use - read: monitor's sleeping when not using and at night.

That said, I don't know if I'd recommend OLED strictly for productivity work. The subpixel layout is different (which you may or may not be sensitive to), the SDR brightness is not as high as IPS/VA alternatives, and burn-in is a flaw inherent to the tech. The main reasons to go OLED in my opinion are motion clarity and HDR which are largely lost on productivity. If you're worried about it, buy one with a long warranty that explicitly mentions burn-in coverage. Otherwise, look into alternatives.

You needed an edu discount AND a special code to get that 800 deal. It was NOT for everybody.
Anyone could get it. You didn't actually need a .edu e-mail. And the special code you just got from customer support.

there's enough people talking about issues that it makes me hesitant to get this even if the deal was still live. 1,000 is a good price... if it works properly and doesn't have issues within 5 years. but that is an unknown.

The monitor works properly. It's just that OLED technology definitely isn't for everyone. That goes for monitor or TV. You just have to baby it to try to prevent the burn in issue. But if you want stress free then definitely avoid OLED at all cost. Mini LED is good alternatives until micro led becomes affordable for the common folks.

Honest question here.. isn't it difficult to play some games on this behemoth? I'm mostly imagining trying to play FPS's on it
I've played a mix of racing, RTS, FPS and honestly it is pretty darn nice for all of the games. If you need help, there is even a cross hair mode for FPS.
