Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

Yeah, I cut an old gift card into fours, and slid them into the enclosure where each clip was. Then pull and voila, it comes apart.

I replace drives as I get newer ones as well. I guess the point I was trying to get to was that you never can truly utilize all of the capacity of your newer drive if you don't upgrade your entire array, because you're limited to 3x capacity of your smallest drive. I'm not looking for a solution to this issue, just mentioning an annoyance I've noticed.

Uh, yeah sure, but then the comment should be "don't forget to have a backup for important files, all drives eventually fail." Larger drives are no more dangerous than their smaller brethren and the comment makes little sense to me. If anything, larger drives of the same type are better in almost every way vs having a bunch of smaller drives - cooler, quieter, cheaper, and generally newer per TB.

As per my previous comment - They're all 7200 CMR over about 12TB I believe and they're all helium. Having said that, there was somewhat of a scandal previously as WD was reporting 5400rpm in the firmware when they were really 7200rpm drives with 5400rpm-ish performance and then WD changed the language and updated firmware speed reporting. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
These used to be white label DC HC550(CMR) drives, model WD180EMFZ.

I use an ancient Opti as a "NAS enclosure" so it's an issue for me. A previous 12TB needed the pin cut but my 14TB didn't. This one probably doesn't have PWDIS (as newer HC550 drives don't usually) but I don't know for sure. Tape is a quick and dirty solution and even painter's tape worked for me for years.
