Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

You can take apart the case they come in by unclipping a few hidden clips then put them into a NAS or desktop computer and setup raid. I did that with 4 10tb easystore drives for my plex server about 4 years ago and they're still going strong.
Unclipping? As in, spreading the seams apart with some thin tool?

Is the 3.3v pin still an issue with the external drives when shucking?
I thought it wasn't an issue for modern PCs -- or are people using these with set NAS boxes that still have trouble with it?

Several years ago when I shucked an Easystore, I just used an old membership card (that was like a CC) I believe.

Any NAS users find yourself always upgrading one or two of your drives as you come across deals, so your drives never all have the same capacity? I currently have 2x10tb, 1x12tb, and 1x14tb. Thinking about picking up two of these to replace the 10tbs, but I really want to wait for the 20tbs (or bigger) to go on sale. Talk about RAID problems.
I use Unraid and I upgrade disks one at a time. Just swapped a 6GB for a 10GB just because the 6 has been running hot for the past 7 years. Data stored on it has always tested fine, but it was always on the top end of the drive's operating specs. It was relegated to offline backup duty to minimize it's operating time.

Yeah, I cut an old gift card into fours, and slid them into the enclosure where each clip was. Then pull and voila, it comes apart.

I replace drives as I get newer ones as well. I guess the point I was trying to get to was that you never can truly utilize all of the capacity of your newer drive if you don't upgrade your entire array, because you're limited to 3x capacity of your smallest drive. I'm not looking for a solution to this issue, just mentioning an annoyance I've noticed.

With 10% cash back available for Western Digital, the final cost will be similar to the 18TB WD Elements Desktop Hard Drive

Is this a good buy if I were to just use as is? Would like to use it as a hard drive where my plex server would pull from.

It may seem redundant and annoying when people make your point but I feel that it's good practice to keep mentioning that. Putting all your important data in one large drive that will fail at one point is a recipe for disaster.

My backup strategy is to automatically clone/image my 500GB main C drive once a week (Incremental weekly, full backup monthly). I then auto schedule clone/image the drive that contains my backup, emulators and games with the same cloning/imaging strategy to a separate drive via Macrium Reflect [macrium.com]. I've been doing this for years now.

The C drive contains all my important documents, photos ECT and the backup drive contains all my installed games and emulators. I only backup things that are important to me or took significant time installing and configuring properly.

As for my NAS video stuff; I consider all that crap disposable data that's easily obtainable. I''m not willing to spend thousands of dollars purchasing expensive Raid devices and redundant drives to back up crap TV shows like My Mother the Car or Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp. However I do backup/clone my music collection once a month as it took significant time to procure and curate my collection. Cool story, am I right Bro? laugh out loud
Uh, yeah sure, but then the comment should be "don't forget to have a backup for important files, all drives eventually fail." Larger drives are no more dangerous than their smaller brethren and the comment makes little sense to me. If anything, larger drives of the same type are better in almost every way vs having a bunch of smaller drives - cooler, quieter, cheaper, and generally newer per TB.

Hey I'm bout to get 2 of these but I'm wondering what's the rpm speeds on these? Are they 7200? Or 5400? And would these be good for downloading pc games on and playing off the external drive?
As per my previous comment - They're all 7200 CMR over about 12TB I believe and they're all helium. Having said that, there was somewhat of a scandal previously as WD was reporting 5400rpm in the firmware when they were really 7200rpm drives with 5400rpm-ish performance and then WD changed the language and updated firmware speed reporting. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
These used to be white label DC HC550(CMR) drives, model WD180EMFZ.

Good price per terrabyte, but lack of an on/off switch will make me wait for another model.
Shuck it into a $20 enclosure that does what you want. You're probably still saving money.

What is the diff bw Elements and Easy store? I got 20 GB for $300 from Amazon prime day but this seems like a better deal unless it's an inferior product as compared to elements

Thanks.
Essentially no difference. BB called them EasyStores so they didn't necessarily have to price match. Same drives inside historically.

after tax.

It also says spend a minimum of 250$ in one or more transactions by 12/26 on mine. I didn't see that earlier so it can be spread over multiple purchases to reach the $250 as long as you have that offer.
Thanks & repped

I use an ancient Opti as a "NAS enclosure" so it's an issue for me. A previous 12TB needed the pin cut but my 14TB didn't. This one probably doesn't have PWDIS (as newer HC550 drives don't usually) but I don't know for sure. Tape is a quick and dirty solution and even painter's tape worked for me for years.
