Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

Does anyone know if Best Buy enforcing the Easystore exclusion from the 10% off coupon you receive for trading in a drive? I noticed it says it excludes Easystore in the fine print now. I was able to use the coupon on Easystore in the past.

Just lucked out at my local Best Buy. Went in with an old HDD looking to trade it in for a 10% coupon to use on this drive (offer shown here [bestbuy.com]). I was expecting it to not even work because Easystore is apparently excluded now according to the offer page. The guys in customer service couldn't find the offer for the storage recycle program in the system, and they ended up just marking the drive down 10% because they didn't see a manager anywhere nearby. Paid $179+tax with my AMEX, and I plan on buying something else to hit the $250 requirement to get the $25 back before the deadline.

Usually buy a 16tb easystore every year. In for 2 of these since I need to upgrade my parity drive in Unraid. Should put me at 106TB capacity.

Any NAS users find yourself always upgrading one or two of your drives as you come across deals, so your drives never all have the same capacity? I currently have 2x10tb, 1x12tb, and 1x14tb. Thinking about picking up two of these to replace the 10tbs, but I really want to wait for the 20tbs (or bigger) to go on sale. Talk about RAID problems.
hah that's exactly my current outlay but i've always run a JBOD so i'm used to losing a little space on the parity disk. no replacement though, only adding!.

Unclipping? As in, spreading the seams apart with some thin tool?

I have a 8tb WD red that must be 12 years old if not older, used daily an still going strong. Have 6 or 7 WD's (10-12 tb) off to the side of it for extra storage, 2 14tb still in the box from last black friday, Why am I thinking about getting this? My important porn is backed up on 50gig blurays. In which I will never find again, fast and easier to just redownload it. But yet, I feel I need to get this.
Tell me more about the important pr0m

Thanks OP, just picked one up in store. There goes $200 that apparently I didn't need for any other frivolous purchases like food, gas, electricity. j/k

Thanks op, picked one up. I was on the edge after reading the comments all day. But it's hard to argue 18tb for $200 + tax

Which is better, this 18 TB or the 14 TB Seagate expansion desktop for $150? I will disassemble them and put them on a NAS.
Definitely this. I've had 3 Seagates die on me within a few years with minimum use. Four WD still going strong, One 8TB I got from who knows when still storing data like a champ

Not really. For our vital stuff I keep local backups at home, sync to a machine at our in-laws, and do cloud backup. Cloud backup is via iDrive and is about $50/yr. Everything else is free except for the hardware. And our vital data doesn't total more than 1TB so that hardware is essentially free because 1TB drives are nearly worthless.

I'm not going to go crazy backing up the large drives with media, VM storage, etc on them because none of that is truly irreplaceable but yeah, that would be expensive because of the sheer size.
Pick your battles.
