Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

So this looks like a proprietary WD cable on the HD side. What kind of cable is on the computer side? Usb-c? Usb-a? A with a c adapter?

It's not proprietary. It's regular external hard drive cable, Micro B to USB-A.

I roll with Drive Pool + snapraid and then OMV with mergerfs + snapraid so I'm not too worried about a drive failure stressing everything. Your data routine should include "stressing" your drives somewhat IMO to ensure your data is what you think it is. A rebuild (or sync in my case) should not be a cross-your-fingers event.
I switched from omv and mergerfs with snapraid to unraid a few years ago. Sooo much easier to maintain. Always updated parity, ssd cache arrays, bigger userbase, scheduled scrubs, easy to backup and restore. Had a year of uptime recently before updating

Seriously though, as time passes these ubiquitous video files become easier to find and their quality and encoding methods improve as well.

If a drive fails that contains all your ill-gotten video crap, just use one of the ARR programs that manages and updates your collection to auto download them for you.

This happened to a friend of mine (he he) [youtube.com] relatively recently and they lost about 8TB of easily found crap that they rarely used. Via ARR automation they were able to procure all the useless crap again in about a week at 40MB/s; no big loss or deal IMO. A bonus was that the files were better encoded/smaller and had superior quality.

I still stand by my claim that spending good money backing up video crap that you rarely watch is foolish and wasteful. Just back up your truly important data and don't worry about junk like Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp.

What are you talking about? No drive retains 100% of it's original value! If you need more storage then you need another dive, simple as that. I have almost 100 TB worth of these in various capacities, and I always need more!

The point was is if you don't have enough storage because you tried to save money on smaller drives, and you have to REPLACE the drive with a bigger one, you aren't saving money because the cost of the old drive is now just an expense…

Not really sure what was unclear about that.

Fantastic deal. I have bought from the equivalent WD drive on BF sale at BB every single year they've offered them (getting at least 1 drive, often more) and most of them are all still running strong (one of them has been flaky, but the others fine).
