It's going through a parity check currently which is too much for my patience. It will probably take 48 hours or more.
I do believe these require the 3v bypass but my enclosure is only fed 12 and 5v so I don't need to worry about it. I'll update when it's finished but I think I'm clear.
It's tempting to keep looking for another but IMHO if you have 1 good drive then buying refurbs isn't the worst option

For the 3.3v bypass (on PWDIS enabled drives and machines using old PSUs), here is the model number "decoder". You should be able to tell just by reading the character in the "y" position.

If you need another reason to not spend a lot of money, there's something to be said for drive diversity - not buying the same model, or at minimum not buying from the same vendor around the same time so that you at least get a different batch. That way you minimize drive deaths around the same time if a batch is bad. With a refurb, the diversity is certainly higher.

I'm extremely happy with this drive so far.
You being up a great point about using different drives and I'll keep that in mind down the road. I still bought another from WD website because my CC was offering 15% cash back and it brought it to the same price as best buy

There is also the issue of warranty. The Reds are three years (five for Pro), but it's only two years for an external like the Easystore, but then you have to shuck it and keep the enclosures in case you need the warranty later.

I've had more WD problems than Seagate over the years, but it really is 50/50 when you factor in price especially with my Macs. If they accidentally get unplugged before ejecting you can't use disk utility to repair.
I went with the Costco 14tb Seagate instead which is a sweet deal considering their very generous 90 day electronics return policy. Easier to shuck too I believe.
