Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

What does WD Data Lifeguard say about the status of the disk/SMART/result of a short test?
Shows SMART failed.. Alas, have to return without knowing when it would be back in stock. Went to a nearby store as well.. OOS..

I got around to testing mine. Showed up fine in windows. Proceeded to shuck it and tossed it into an enclosure. It's my first time using unraid so I'm trying to do things "by the book".
It's going through a parity check currently which is too much for my patience. It will probably take 48 hours or more.

I do believe these require the 3v bypass but my enclosure is only fed 12 and 5v so I don't need to worry about it. I'll update when it's finished but I think I'm clear.

It's tempting to keep looking for another but IMHO if you have 1 good drive then buying refurbs isn't the worst option

Yeah, on drives this large the unRaid preclear is going to take days. But I wouldn't trust data to the drive unless it passes some long initial tests. Patience may be fraying, but you're doing what needs to be done.

For the 3.3v bypass (on PWDIS enabled drives and machines using old PSUs), here is the model number "decoder". You should be able to tell just by reading the character in the "y" position.

If you need another reason to not spend a lot of money, there's something to be said for drive diversity - not buying the same model, or at minimum not buying from the same vendor around the same time so that you at least get a different batch. That way you minimize drive deaths around the same time if a batch is bad. With a refurb, the diversity is certainly higher.

My patience has settled once I realized that preclear is probably worth it! I threw in an old 250gig drive for kicks and it came back with over 1700 errors. The 18tb is over 50% through with 0 errors and it's writing at an average of 210 MB/s
I'm extremely happy with this drive so far.
You being up a great point about using different drives and I'll keep that in mind down the road. I still bought another from WD website because my CC was offering 15% cash back and it brought it to the same price as best buy

Got the 18tb easystore from BB. Didn't need tape, Synology recognizes without. Bummer though - it's a white label WD180EDGZ, not red.

I thought WD180EDGZ was better than red drives.

The WD180EDGZ is a rebadge HC550. The HC550 is a datacenter drive and is likely "better" (all things considered) then a Red. The wildcard is that the WD180EDGZ is rebadged likely because it didn't pass muster for whatever reason as a HC550. It's obviously possible it's a virgin HC550, but it's also possible that it isn't, and in that case most would prefer the Red.

There is also the issue of warranty. The Reds are three years (five for Pro), but it's only two years for an external like the Easystore, but then you have to shuck it and keep the enclosures in case you need the warranty later.

All mechanical drives fail at some point. Seagate=WD
I've had more WD problems than Seagate over the years, but it really is 50/50 when you factor in price especially with my Macs. If they accidentally get unplugged before ejecting you can't use disk utility to repair.
I went with the Costco 14tb Seagate instead which is a sweet deal considering their very generous 90 day electronics return policy. Easier to shuck too I believe.

FYI - Capital One still has 8% cash back so comes out to $210 which is basically $11.66. Not bad if you still need one.

Well price has increased to $404.99 at BB even though it's still OOS, I guess it's safe to say it's not coming back at this price for the rest of the month at least

They're all white now in the enclosures, no reason to be bummed.
