It's definitely gonna be the same price or lower soon.
Open-boxes or refurbish deals are only good when they're quite cheaper than their new counter-deals.
Here are my initial thoughts after using it for one day of office work:
- Much better battery life when running on full brightness + battery saver (about 5-6 hours of continuous use on one charge versus the Victus's 2-3 hours on word)
- Display is clean and I feel like it is bright enough for what I need (I was coming from a <250 nits computer)
- Speaker wire protection isn't great; meaning if you are in a dead silent room you can hear a slight crackle from the speakers.
- Under-key LEDs emit a very high pitched noise (but goes away if you turn it off or if your ears are shot lmao). Also the refresh rate on keyboard LED's is choppy, with less of a smooth transition between colors and more of a choppy .5 second per color occurring.
- Some concern about smoothness of use, where occasionally it will stutter when opening file explorer or other OS elements. Did have an issue where I had to ctrl+alt+delete my way through the sign in screen earlier to pop it out of a weird glitch. Only happened once.
- Microphone and speaker quality are nice.
- keypad and keyboard are responsive and nice to type on. The keypad has a distinct *click* so if you want something that doesn't make as much noise when clicking this may drive you nuts
-USB, charger and hdmi ports are on the middle of the back (behind the screen) which is an odd choice but whatever.
- The fans, if allowed to crank to max, are LOUD. However, you can turn on a silent mode for office use such that you don't ever hear the fans at all.
-Charger power converter is beefy, but I typically set mine up once and don't charge out in public so this was a non-issue for me.
For the price, the battery life plus its potential to play games is great. Perfect for a grad student who needs it to split as a work computer during the day. I will update once I download some games tonight and take it for a spin. I have built PC's for a long time and feel like I am seasoned in what to look for. I am skeptical of Lenovo as a brand but may hang on to this laptop and not return it.
Day 2 Updates:
- Finger prints are noticeable on the gray lip of the screen (but I have abnormally oily finger prints)
-Battery consumption is variable: For keeping the laptop slightly on and open during a 3 hour meeting (occasionally reading off it but mostly just sitting there) it depleted 6% per hour. For actually using it, it depleted 22% per hour, but that might be impacted by the fact that I was powering a peripheral monitor during most of this time.
Day 5(?) Updates:
- Finally got a chance to game with this over the weekend. I tested with Valheim and Civilization 5. It ran both at max settings for an extended duration without problem (no overheating) but the fans definitely put in some work. No stuttering or screen tearing.
- I gamed with it plugged in and unplugged and found in line with previous reviewers that it depletes about 50% of the battery every 45 minutes.
- Today I will be testing if using the computer not on battery saver paradoxically increases battery life. Will update later.
Day 8 Updates:
- The battery life doesn't seem to change much based on if the system is running battery saver. I got roughly the same battery life (15-25%/hour) with the power saver off.
- The charging is crazy fast. Like 35% of battery in 20 minutes
