They're good products but Apple deserves the ridicule for the memory stinginess.
For anybody in the pasco area of Florida. Pawn max on us 19, port Richey has this air used with 20 battery cycles for $550. Saw this yesterday was tempted but already had the 14" m1 pro
I've used an M1 Air with 8GB for almost four years now. I am amazed at how well it handled an average workload.

There are many reviews talked about this. For example: "In our testing, the MacBook Air M2's SSD was up to 50% slower than the MacBook Air M1's SSD."
Yes, it's true that Apple for the M2 MacBook Air, they went with a single chip rather than the dual on the M1 for the SSD. They corrected it on the M3 by going back to the dual SSD chip . This only apply to the base 256 SSD. The 512GB and higher, all have dual SSD chip.
IMO, I wouldn't buy either M1 or M2 MacBook Air when the M3 MacBook Air is $850. The $100 difference between the models when buying a laptop, you should always go with the newer one when buying Apple products. There is enough of an upgrade that I would say get the M3 Air over the M2 or M2 over M1 if the price difference is $100 or less.
The M3 fixes the SSD issue, you'll get a least one more year of OS upgrade, slightly better CPU/GPU performance, better WIFI (6E), better Bluetooth , dual external display (with the lid closed), better 3nm chipset efficiency (battery life), and it's one year newer.

Very weird. I ended up picking up the air m3 today with 16 gbs ram in 15". I have to say it's really beautiful and the screen is huge. I'll run some tests on it to see how it handles everything in terms of speed.
M3 didn't seem to have the issue. Only M2s with the lowest spec storage

8gb is enough for a single browser tab. Don't even think about multitasking.

Although you may not, I regret buying an 8GB M-series Mac. Too many run-ins with heavy paging.

In what way is the SSD better? I don't know anything about it and thought an SSD is an SSD.
While this is factually accurate (the M1 splits its storage between two SSD chips whereas the M2 has the one chip for same capacity of storage, thereby making M1's read/write speeds faster technically speaking), this makes NO difference in the real world to the average 'consumer' archetype of Macbook Air users. It's BS. The vast majority of y'all aren't doing high frequency trading or editing IMAX movies or some nonsense like that on the Air. Get over yourselves you nutjobs.

Patently false. You're stirring something up for the sake of stirring something up.

I'm on my 2017 MacBook Pro, which has 8 GB RAM and a 2.3 Ghz Intel processor.

I have dozens of tabs open, in addition to Word, PPT, and Outlook. I can Skype and FaceTime without issue (other than the fan kicking into gear about 15 minutes into the calls). I use this computer every day and virtually never have issues with it.

It depends largely on what someone is going to use the machine for, which in any case certainly can be more than a single browser tab.

What do you mean, 16gb will be standard? Where is this indicated? thx
Nowhere. It's been indicated that the M4 MacBook Pro will start at 16GB Ram but there's no indication they'll update the MacBook Air again this year.
There's a good chance next year's new Air will start at 16GB Ram. But they'll obviously keep selling the M3 ones like they're still selling M2 right now. Also most likely means the "starting at" for the smallest new model will be $1199+.

I have been mighty happy with my M1 MacBook Air and don't have any issues with 8GB Ram and relatively small 256GB SSD configuration. The computer is snappy for my general use and I don't try to store anything unwanted on the hard drive. People should not just take issues with 8GB Ram and declare that this configuration renders the computer useless. Only the heavy tasks (graphic design, for example) demanding huge computing power will need 16GB and up RAM. If you are the type that keep your computer for long, this will last many years. However, my plan is to switch to a new one in another year and selling this, even if I get half the money I paid originally.

Smaller ram means longer waiting time, after all modern systems use hard drive space as swap memory. Your time your life your call

Again, 8GB ram. Finally this year apple is ditching that nonsense it looks like
How did you find out what they are going to announce on September 9th? Was there a leak? Or are you just speculating that Apple will finally offer 16GB as the minimum memory. If so, the current 8GB laptops will probably see major liquidation after September 9th.

2 years old and 8 GB of ram for 750 isn't a good deal imo. used M1 Mac air for way less or spending a bit more for a pro 14 inch would be a much better deal
As long as by "a bit more" you mean nearly twice as much for a Pro. Also not quite getting why it is you point out "2 years old", insinuating that it's a bad thing, and then you recommend instead something that is 3 years old.

Used will be cheaper but that going with that course comes with its own set of risks.

The real issue is that the M3 version is only $100 more and you'll get that extra year out of it before it's EOL'd, if you even have it that long.

Any $400 Windows laptop with 16GB can do a decent job on basic computer tasks. The reason why people are willing to pay more for a MacBook is because of its excellent handling of graphic intensive tasks. So no need to pay almost the double of Windows laptop to do the basic computer tasks. But if you want to use it for a graphic intensive tasks, I recommend a MacBook with at least M1Pro with 16GB.
