Let's call this for what it is -- "used". You're buying a two year old used computer. One you can get a brand new one of the latest model (with much higher specs) for $500-600.

The price for a new one is so cheap ($499 at Apple education store) … with much better specs (twice the RAM) … it makes no sense to buy this at a $299 price point.

Why? The gap is still 40% and there's a lot of people who just want an office/browsing Mac and realistically don't need the extra ram.

It's criminal that they made these things with 8 GB of non-upgradeable RAM in 2023.

They took a really nice CPU and constrained it with very limited RAM-- the base configuration should have been 16 GB, and it would have added, what, $20 to the cost?

Agreed. For a company that is known for their entry level hardware being considerably better than the average Windows device, they're a couple years too late making 16GB the minimum. That said, a Mac for $300...

Thanks! this is a great gift for my mom!, all she needs it for is online shopping and watching some youtube videos. this would also be a great choice for older folks that just need a basic computer.

Browsers start heavily tasking 8GB devices nowadays. Absolutely useless from a professional standpoint too - almost everything uses some kind of AI these days and it needs RAM. Get the iPad Air for basic tasks and USB it to a monitor or a TV, it'll do the same plus you get the portability. Apple missed the AI opportunity by flooding their consumer base with 8GB devices, now they'll need to trade in and discount their latest tech to catch up.
This can be greatly alleviated by avoiding the absolute pig known as Google Chrome. As you say, iPads run full-fat Safari on more lightweight specs—yes, different OS enforcing memory eviction etc., but the web gets browsed regardless!

People are being weird. People are acting like the difference between a product that cost $599 MSRP, more than twice what product being listed cost, means nobody should ever consider this one. You can tell some people just assume money grows on trees.

Some people might only have $300 to buy a device. Simply spending two or 300 more might not be an option for them so it's between this and a $300 old Windows laptop or a Chromebook or something. It's crazy how people just assume a few hundred bucks is meaningless to.

$500.

FYI, who still waste time growing money on trees? When you can just type in the numbers on the computer

Yeah, it's probably people who returned this for the new M4 Mac mini. These are still being sold brand new. I think this is a steal for the price and for every day use.
Agree, I wouldn't pay their 499 new price at Best Buy but in the $200's it's hard to argue.

I dont think so. I got a m1 mac air openbox in apr 24 and I think they cycle the openbox countless times. It was activated in 2021 and likely multiple sold as openbox and returned because it had a broken key. So, I can assume openbox can have multiple owners over years. Only openbox that likely worth could be a the current gen or previous gen
That's interesting. I hadn't thought about it from that perspective.

For all the bashers on this model, we purchased one for our church to do presentations (which handles a lot of video processing) that has been pretty much flawless even with sending multiple outputs (using a Black magic Deck link Duo to add the video outputs as well as a USB-c->VGA adapter and mirroring to an Apple TV) with, at least, 4 different things going to those outputs . Sure 16GB would be better, but the way the M chips work, it doesn't need as much RAM. For anyone who has had issues, I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. Lots of other people have had success with the same setup. For sure, it might be worth spending the extra to get the latest model and with 16GB, but for those who may not have the extra money and could use this, it's not as bad as so many of you are making it out to be.
