Not sure where you're coming from on this. Intel draws 300W on open test benches just to top AMD's gaming on chips that actually hit those speeds in people's normal machines. (Most prebuilts with Intel will actually not beat AMD because you need exceptional cooling or they throttle). So AMD made this ONE chip that could beat Intel using tech that Intel can't match.

Now when I see an Intel chip actually win in gaming at 125W power envelopes, I'll concede the crown to Intel. But AMD does need to get better at lying...ahem...I mean marketing. Just release a 600W chip that runs at 7GHz and needs phase cooling, then act like your chip is the fastest stock chip. That's nearly what Intel is doing. This CPU is very strong in gaming. Neck and neck with the latest CPUs in certain games.

One thing I really despise is popular review youtube channels not doing 4k reviews but instead focusing on the stupid 1080p trying to find the bottleneck. How good is the 5800x3d at 4k? Is it still the best compared to lesser resolutions or should I wait for Intel 13th gen?

So here's a question for those more knowledgeable than me...I have an old 1700x chip. Would this be a decent upgrade or would I need a new motherboard as well? I know they're both AM4 chipset so it would technically work, but is there some new feature that my old AM4 motherboard wouldn't be able to take advantage of?

If your not going to do a build for at least a year, is this still a buy?

Have a 2070 Super and AMD 5 3600 and riding it out for a bit
I'm on the same boat and I will not switch any time soon

You have a similar setup to me. Gamersnexus did a live stream where he was overclocking ryzen 7000 to over 6ghz and he said realistically, if your happy with your current setup, like a ryzen 3000 series, it doesn't make sense to upgrade unless your going very top of the line, 5800X3D is definitely top of the pack.

But right now you have a pretty evenly matched gaming setup, if you upgrade to this cpu for example, you can do it with your current hardware, motherboard and ram. But you will be in about the same boat because the 2070 will hold you back. So if your gonna upgrade from a 3600 you better upgrade to a 3080ti or 3090 to take advantage of the cpu performance.

Another thing is. Ryzen 7000 requires a very expensive motherboard and ddr5 is still crazy expensive. And AMD is actually gonna support AM4 with another sku of CPUs before the end of next year. So you gonna get a lot of mileage out of your current platform.

Depends. So if you have like an x370 board for example you can absolutely run this cpu. But keep in mind. To get the most out of this cpu, you need a 3080ti or 3090. If your running a GTX 1660 for example, the cpu upgrade won't benefit you much outside of video encoding and production workloads.

Also you won't get pci express gen 4 with your current setup. But that won't be a problem if you upgrade your GPU to 3080/3090. And amd is gonna support AM4 for quite a while even after end of life

Well the reason why they do that is because the 4k test results all those top CPUs tend to bunch together in frame rates. The 1080p shows the clear advantages of the hardware itself where it can stretch its legs more.

Thanks. I have a Taichi x370 board and currently have a 1080ti. I am looking to make some PC Upgrades over the next few months and didn't know the extent of the upgrades I was gonna have to make. Seems like I'd get a lot out of just a new cpu and gpu

I am running Ryzen 5 5600X but the jump from a 65 watt to this 105 watt...I think I will wait another year or two. The X3D is definitely on my buy list just can't justify the small performance increase at such a higher price today.
Yeah that's not a huge improvement in performance maybe 20%. For me personally if your gonna upgrade and notice a difference that % needs to be like 50% minimum. I have a 3600 and this chip would see an improvement IF I also upgrade to a 3080ti or something. But I have an rtx 3050 and it's a good pairing with my 3600, if anything it's a bottleneck compared to the 3600. So I'm just gonna be content with this and if I do upgrade, it would have to be next year and I'll wait for the 5800x to show up on sale for 150$ lol

Yeah a GPU upgrade would make a bigger difference for you than a cpu upgrade. The RTX cores and NVENC encoder does wonders for all sorts of games and programs that even the powerful 1080 ti doesn't even have

Just don't get rtx 4000 series. That's requiring special power supplies now

I upgraded this year from a GTX 1060 to an RTX 3050, and the 3050 is similar to a GTX 1070, but the difference is it has the RTX cores and latest NVENC encoder which the 1070 doesn't have. So I can screen capture with nvidia shadow play and it doesn't effect the frames hardly at all. And some video editing apps I have, certain features didn't run before and now they run smoothly now.

Currently on 3600 with 3070ti would this upgrade be worth it for me? Mostly play RTS and 4x stuff

This is no longer shipping from Newegg. Discount still works, but it's from a third-party seller, which I understand is highly questionable in particular on Newegg.
