Good price, decent laptop, It's not the best laptop at the best price ever, but it's about as good as it gets at this price outside of pricing errors.
This laptop would be fine for that, and you wont regret it, depending on what you prioritize. Although I want this laptop it wont suit my needs so let me tell you what my thought process is when buying a laptop to maybe help you out.
I need to do the same things you listed just with a few other priorities, and for myself I think either a XPS, LG gram laptop or Macbook will do it all for me. I figured this out by making a priority list of what is important to me.

Here is my priority:

Battery life
Portability
Performance
Screen quality

I move around a lot with my laptop so this one will be a pain to move around with, and the battery life is okay at best.

I'm personally going to try Macbook out for the first time in my life as I really need it to be light and have a long lasting battery, and the M1 chipset seems to do well in everything that I need.
The LG gram and XPS will also do it all for me, but the battery life is much better on the Macbook and the M chipset is really powerful even in the macbook airs.

Rest assured if you're just going to be stationary then this laptop will be just fine, and this laptop is relatively small compared to other laptops with similar specs, but after having a lightweight laptop provided by my job, I can't go back to big clunky laptops with giant battery blocks for productivity reasons. For gaming I have a desktop, but a powerful gaming laptop wouldnt hurt either.

The games that I will be playing in the future are lightweight and do not require typical triple A game hardware, so these will easily run:

League of legends
Diablo 4

The macbook should be able to run both of these and that's more than enough for me.

Hope this might have helped you, and if you do get this laptop then it will be wonderful!

Also when I spend around $1000 I will go to my local bestbuy and check these laptops out in person. This laptop listed here is really nice, and has a good enough build quality. I'd advise you to do the same.

if no TB4 and no HDMI 2.1 - can I drive external LG OLED TV to 4K 120Hz?

Damn I bought this at retail $1650 and I've used it a lot of course but not even a year later and it's down to $1100…crazy. Definitely a no brainer at that price unless you want/need a bigger screen.

I keep reading these posts because my son plays a ton of games on Steam and we want to get him a new computer after 6 years. They all seem to come with 1tb drives and not much room for expansion. He's over 1tb and we have an external drive sweeping up the overage.

Is this rare or do people buy these and swap out the SDD on them out regularly?

I almost feel like I should be cloning his drive with a bigger one and just keep going on what he's got.
If your son plays a lot of games on his PC, then I recommend this one:

https://slickdeals.net/f/16303795-asus-rog-strix-g15-advantage-edition-15-6-qhd-ryzen-5980hx-16gb-dd...

Just upgrade the RAM and the SSD (which are cheap on SD right now).

For those considering this or g15 strix ae may also want to consider the vram different. The strix ae has 16gb.

I think you mean the RAM not VRAM as that is the GPU video ram that is not upgradable, however here is the link to what Jarrod's Tech recommends:

I just purchased three of the Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 7 AMD w/ RTX 3060 (15" screen) for about $950 each after discount, two e-coupons, medical provider discount, 6% urlhasbeenblocked cashback, and credit card cashback.

My kids previously had 15" screens and said they were the perfect size for portability and utility, but I imaging a 14" screen would also be fine.

Will the ROG Zephyrus perform significantly better?

Specs for the Legions:
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 5 6600H Processor (3.30 GHz up to 4.50 GHz)
Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64
Graphic Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 3060 Laptop GPU 6GB GDDR6
Memory: 16 GB DDR5-4800MHz (SODIMM) (2 x 8 GB)
Storage: 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC
Display: 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 300 nits, 165Hz, LED Backlight, Narrow Bezel
Camera: 720P HD with Array Microphone & Electronic Privacy Shutter
Battery: 4 Cell 80Whr
AC Adapter: 300W
Keyboard: 4zone RGB Backlit, Storm Grey - English (US)
WLAN: Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX & Bluetooth® 5.1 or above
Warranty: One Year Legion Ultimate Support
Add-ons: 3 Month Xbox Game Pass

Thanks a lot!

Does he play a ton of games and store 1TB worth of games? If most of the space is taken by files like movies and pictures instead, I'd suggest using an external or NAS for those, and only have games and applications on the laptop.

Believe it or not, it's a whole bunch of mods and DLCs and saved games. He also creates maps. Most of the mods, DLC and saved games are Hearts of Iron and Men of War on steam. He also creates and saves ROBLOX stuff.

Actually I think it is 12gb not 16gb vram that the 6800m comes with.

Hmm. I's pretty weird that the M16 version (intel chip, comparable to this one) price has gone back to $1650 while G14 is discounted further ...

Yeah I think you are mixing the two up. VRAM is the video RAM which is dedicated to the graphics card. However, RAM which is the upgradable portion is what is recommended on this unit. Typically it has been proven to give a performance boost of ~20%. The problem is that the 2X8GB single rank RAM provided was causing a performance bottleneck.

best laptop purchase i've ever had. i've been playing cod mw 2, averaging 112fps on custom settings with AMD FSR ON. fan noise is not too loud even under load times. upgraded my ssd to 2tb gen 4 and upgraded my wifi card to intel 6e from mediatek card. my tip is to clean install, and install the AMD adrenalin drivers from AMD website and not from ASUS support page so that you can update the drivers when updates are available. the gpu driver from ASUS support page does not update that frequently so, most current games need a driver update and will not run if the drivers not updated. for adrenaline drivers, i have no issues so far. also, please update the BIOS firmware every time you see a new update. it will enhance the system performance and stable. the only thing i did not upgrade is the ram because i will loose the quad channel once you put it in different memory capacity.

I'm surprised that in every thread where this is posted no one really highlights that using this to game in clamshell is essentially impossible since it thermal throttles and powers down.

the Legions will perform better in games because of the 3060s they are the full power ones (140W). Zephyrus would be better for portability
