Somebody always says this -- again, specs might look low on paper, but the Mac OS is incredibly efficient and doesn't actually require as much "horsepower" to get things done. If you don't want one, don't buy it, but it's a decent option at this price for people who are in the Apple ecosystem.

This is a decent deal for the M1 Air, but for $200 more, the 13.6" M2 Air at Costco might be the better deal. 8GB RAM with the M1 Air and it's UMA (unified memory architecture) is ample for most people...thoroughly tested & proven to be able to handle just about anything you throw at it for the next several years before going through another "sell and upgrade" cycle.

What's the better deal? This M1 8/256 version for $799 or the M2 8/256 version from Costco currently on sale for $999? Worth the extra $200?

You have no idea what you're talking about. This machine has been running my recording studio for 2 years, and this is the exact price I got it for at the beginning of 2021. This is the best bang for the buck in this price range, sorry to inform you.

Yeah M1 chip google the performance on that thing and get back to me when Intel catches up without frying my morning eggs in 10 years.

Not worth the extra 200

I feel this could hit $650 at some point given the iPad Pro with identical internals hit $549. I wonder which costs more to produce.

The m2 8/256 actually have worse performance than the m1. This is because the m2 models, the 256gb ssd are worse than the one they used with the m1 models.

The higher capacity ssd is fine though. Basically m2 with 256gb is bad.

This is all the laptop 95% of people really need.

Battery life on these is simply farking unreal. I did a 10 day workday with plenty of zoom calls totally unplugged and I was still over 50% charged.

I love mine too bad I dropped it from my lap on Xmas eve and now part of my screen has vertical lines. It hit on the one area that wasn't case covered. Looked into replacing the screen and it looks like a new screen from apple or fixit is around $500. I'd be better off buying a new one at that price. Although, amazon and eBay has screen replacements for around $200. It would have been the first time long term AppleCare would have came in handy. Still not quite sure what route to take ? May just live with it for a while.

The fact that there's an argument against 8gb of ram means it's just not enough for some people.

If all you do is have three tabs open and use iLife '08, you'll be fine with 8gb of ram. I have a 16gb ram M1 and frequently max it out on admin stuff, without even trying sometimes.

It makes 8gb feel snappy because of using your SSD as swap memory. Which is great, until you put excessive wear on your drive and it fails prematurely.

I picked up one of these from Amazon when they were $799.
I'm loving mine, battery life is amazing. Excellent laptop, super light, great keyboard.
Price is nice !!! Dont let the specs fool you, its a little beast and blows to everything I have thrown at it.
No fan noise, superior battery life.

I am very happy with mine.

Ya, there are definitely valid reasons for some people to upgrade to a 16GB M1, but most people who argue about this or think they need 16GB for "future-proofing" are simply misinformed, not understanding how Apple's unified memory architecture differs from their Intel experience. Your point about the increased risk of the SSD prematurely failing due to excessive wear seems plausible. I'll have to look into that, but seems like that risk (if valid) could be mitigated through Apple Care and a 3-year "sell & upgrade" cycle.

I got the M2 8gb from Amazon for $999 a few weeks ago. Probably the best laptop I've owned. It has an upgraded design, magsafe so you get an extra port, a fingerprint reader, brighter screen, and you get more screen size. I think that plus the processor makes it worth the extra $200.

Only downside is the notch but I start to ignore it after using it for 30 minutes.
