I have a number of these 5TB portable hard drives, they mostly are for people to use for storage, sort of double backup if you have NAS with same stuff on it. The top speed when plugging into a usb3 port is between 90-110mps, which is the same speed as my NAS gives when I exchange stuff on my PC.

The other way I use it is label the 5TB portable with YEAR , for example, I would put 2023 year on hard drive, and over the course of year, copy stuff from the PC or transfer stuff to laptop or share some stuff with others. This way current 2023 stuff is on device, and when 2024 comes out just put a new 5tb on for that year.

Just be VERY Careful to not bump into these drives if the hard drive is in active use, ... because you will corrupt the drive. BE VERY CAREFUL! It is SMR drive which is fine for storage. The thing is if you have laptop, and you take it with you, be VERY Careful, because a bump, or jarring the drive when writing could ruin your day. Smilie
Does that matter considering it's a HDD? Saved on cost.
Nope. Hdd soldered on.

thats mac for ya - anyways most ppl have usb-c hubs that they are using with their laptops to connect their other devices and older montiors.

These portable spinning drives seem to be stuck at 5TB forever and the prices have not dropped like SSD. At some point, SSD will get to these prices and these either die, get cheaper or increase in storage.

They are fine if you are using as another backup to say cloud.

You need a cable anyway. You can buy a USB-C to 3.1 cable.

Dropped it once. 3ft fall to a carpet.

Whole drive corrupted.

I like Toshiba portables with a little more reinforced casing.

I want to avoid confusion about this drive. Yes the connection to the 5TB drive is micro-usb type b the other end of the cable is USB 3.0. And you get around 90-110 speeds if you use usb 3.0 port. Now maybe others can share if they have adaptor to go from micro-usb type b to 3.1 or other lightening port, etc. If you have experience with experimenting with those other adaptors, then link to adaptor that works with this hard drive. Help us out. Please do NOT share LINKS if you have not personally used. I would hate to steer people to wrong adaptor and have to go through return process. Share the speed you get using different adaptors. I was happy with the 90-110mps speeds. I have SSD dirves and I put them in enclosers and I don't have to be as gentle with them as these 5TB portables , but the price of SSD cards are more expensive than these 5TB portables. .

I've been hunting smaller drives to make a RAID or something but they never go on sale. But this is a tempting deal

But I don't pull the trigger unless it's $0.015 per gb (90/5000 is .018)

Bought 4 of these May 2021. They sit stationary in a well-ventilated A/V closet, and 2 of them are making ticking noises. Still reading fine, with no smartctl errors, but I expect them to go soon.

Make sure you have an extended credit card warranty - these 2.5" 5TB disks aren't built to last.

DO NOT buy these for RAID! Use CMR drives (not SMR which these drives are). These are 2.5 inch laptop type drives that don't need external power. The 3.5 inch drives need power and would work with RAID if they are CMR drive. Portable 2.5 drives are more expensive because of the portable factor and small footprint.

NOW, I would NEVER in a million years have them going 24/7 for months on end! NEVER.

I use them to just plug into PC, copy stuff or transfer stuff, UNPLUG, and put in closet or safe place! PERIOD!

I currently use SSD drives as data drives in PC's or other places , and leave on 24/7. I would use 3.5 inch CRM drives , maybe NAS type or good quality for 24/7 use or the Best Buy WD easystore ones in enclosures.

Yikes, I hope others are not using these WD 5TB portables as 24/7 drives. Scary!

Last time I ordered this on eBay, it was shipped in a larger box with no padding. The drive survived, but I can't recommend buying from BB via eBay for this reason. Get it in the store, if you can.

Yes, there are definitely bigger, but they all need an AC adapter. The largest ones that can run off a USB port seem to be 5TB.

WD makes portable 5TB USB-C models as well but they tend to run higher. It isn't like the the drive throughput is any faster using USB-A or -C, just convenience.
