The other way I use it is label the 5TB portable with YEAR , for example, I would put 2023 year on hard drive, and over the course of year, copy stuff from the PC or transfer stuff to laptop or share some stuff with others. This way current 2023 stuff is on device, and when 2024 comes out just put a new 5tb on for that year.
Just be VERY Careful to not bump into these drives if the hard drive is in active use, ... because you will corrupt the drive. BE VERY CAREFUL! It is SMR drive which is fine for storage. The thing is if you have laptop, and you take it with you, be VERY Careful, because a bump, or jarring the drive when writing could ruin your day.

The drive in this thread is a 2.5 inch portable hard drive, and doesn't need extenal power to work. You just plug it into usb 3.0 port and it is tiny drive (compared to 3.5 drive).
With your 5tb external drive it's much bigger, and you need to get power cord to plug into wall and then use usb 3.0 port to get it to work.
The reason we buy these tiny PORTABLE models is for small form factor, and not having to plug power into the device. This is good price of 89 dollars for this drive for 5TB.
p.s. If it says EXTERNAL DRIVE it means 3.5 inch hard drive.
If it say PORTABLE DRIVE it means 2.5 inch hard drive.
... you might already know this, but you mentioning 2015 when you bought your 3.5 inch external drive for 130 dollars, and and saying this Portable for 89 dollars just seems ok for 2023. I have bought plenty of hard drives since 2015 (8 years ago), and couldn't tell how current your knowledge was. You can get 14 gig hard drives for under 200 dollars in 3.5 inch size that would be much better drives than 2015 era.

Exactly. I have a few of these - one of them fell a few inches - yes inches - and it completely destroyed the drive. After that I vowed to stay away from them.
I use them to just plug into PC, copy stuff or transfer stuff, UNPLUG, and put in closet or safe place! PERIOD!
I currently use SSD drives as data drives in PC's or other places , and leave on 24/7. I would use 3.5 inch CRM drives , maybe NAS type or good quality for 24/7 use or the Best Buy WD easystore ones in enclosures.
Yikes, I hope others are not using these WD 5TB portables as 24/7 drives. Scary!

Fear the future! Or simply use it as is since both ports are still supported and $1 adapters are a viable solution
I don't understand why people are clamoring for a USB-C interface on something like this?
As others have pointed out, get an external SSD if you need quicker speeds. This is just cold storage plug in to your desktop or laptop and copy files off or on and disconnect as needed.
We are talking about a bump or fall when the DRIVE is in ACTIVE use and writing stuff to drive. Drive is attached to laptop or PC on table, and you "move" your laptop or PC, and bump or jar the drive, it could corrupt the data. Drive works great, for storage, copy/transfer stuff, and then unplug and put in closet.
