If I run Warzone with this CPU and try and have live sports on my other monitor, the video stream lags really bad. It's incredible for gaming performance but the multitasking isn't good. For context, the previous 3700x I had would do it flawlessly but it left a lot to be desired for gaming
The 3700X has 8 cores like the 5800X3D but they're all slower. This makes no sense.

If there were a way to put money on it, I would bet "no", we will not see this below $200 in 2023 (but that is just my guess).

For that to happen, ALL processors would need to drop 30%+. Keep in mind, MSRP is still $320-ish for the 5800x3D. As an AMD stock holder, I REALLY hope that doesn't happen.

New procs, when released, will certainly command a premium, but there is always value in the lower end of the spectrum for us "deal" seekers. The quantities will get smaller and smaller, but, as a stand alone product, I don't see this particular model (touted as the best AM4 gaming chip AMD has) breaking the $200 barrier.

Now broken out of a combo deal is a different story. The Micro Center combo deals for the 7700x, as an example, currently place a value of $250 on that processor. It would not be surprising for me to see a $375-400 5800x3D deal pop up by BF as retailers try to dump their mobos/ram and use this processor to do so.

Let's qualify that a little??

There seemed to have been an issue with a small subset of devices, but has it not been recorded? No doubt similar to ANY new technology release.

I remember this being said last summer...
Haha, so true. To be fair, times are SLIGHTLY different than they were at that time.

That said, many processors have a similar price (+/-10%) for months (if not increasing in price a little), so there is no real expectation in my mind that we see a 30-50% price drop.

Even if it did take place, I suspect most people could get most of that "lost" value by selling their existing processors now during the upgrade (for those that care to do so). If, like me, you are still rocking a 1600 non-xt variant, the "hold the line" for an extra $40 savings philosophy doesn't really seem as strong.

....I mean, I am still going to find a deal (what kind of SDer would I be if I didn't?!?), but I will not be seeking rock bottom pricing.

The chips were sold and advertised to be overclockers, but there is a flaw that will not allow most performance related overclocking.. much like the security design flaws of yesteryear

Ah, I am glad I asked.

I am coming a little late to the 3D party so everything I saw regarding issues revolved around the over voltage allowances causing mobos and procs to brick...which was subsequently remedied.

I was unaware of any promotion of overclocking capabilities. I attribute this to the fact that nearly all of the reviews/literature I have seen recently have communicated that these chips do not overclock (or certainly not as well as their non 3D brethren).

No, they were not.

Quite the opposite. AMD specifically prohibited overclocking.

The fact that the processor does not support overclocking was confirmed by Robert Hallock from AMD Technical Marketing in an interview given to the HotHardware website

Followed by various hackers looking for ways around that.

The problems reported recently apply to the newer x3d chips(7xxx series), not the 5800x3d. Also, I don't think they were ever advertised as an overclocking chip. With the extra cache, they really don't need to.

Coming from a 1600x with 32mb DDR4 3600 and a 2080. I feel the CPU is my bottleneck, and this is a huge upgrade. Is this the best ever AM4, or am I OK just going with a 5700x at $180? I work from home and run dual 4k monitors with 60 chrome tabs open and another 20 in Edge along with Outlook and Teams. I mostly game WoW, BG3, or stream PS+ games. I got the cash to move to AM5, but it'd be twice as much with RAM and mobo to grab a 7700. Is that even worth it?

I am in somewhat the same situation (still rocking the 1600...but you have the "x", lucky guy!)

My issue is that my mobo (b350 I think) likely won't support these newer AM4 procs. I will have to double check. But I digress. Any new processor will seem like a massive boost for you. If you don't need to upgrade anything else (you have enough ram, your mobo supports it, your graphics card is adequate for you), then I don't think you can go wrong with either.

The 5800x3d does best with multi threaded games. Faster processors (multiple cores but higher clock speeds) do better in single threaded tasks (like everything you described that is NOT a game). If you game most of the time, go for the 3d. Otherwise, take the 5700 and use the $100 savings to upgrade your next system 2 years earlier than you otherwise would have.

Keep in mind, this is only one benchmarking site, but it shares provides some insight: toms hardware cpu comparisons [tomshardware.com]

FWIW, you could also look to get the 5600 and overclock it. From what I have read, this chip can do very well (provided you win the silicon lottery) and, with a lower TDP, won't require a massive investment to cool while being OC'd.

I assume you don't have a microcenter nearby or the $450 7700x deal would be a dl o brainer for you. Newegg has a mATX 7700x combo right now for $475 after coupon which gets closer (for those who don't need a solid mobo via which to OC), but that is subjective (and many people don't like Newegg now, it seems).

The 7600 in the AM5 saves $100 over the 7700 processor but has nearly the same capability (if overclocked), so I was strongly looking at that as an alternative to the Microcenter deal.

...I am still "ruined" for all "deals" after having seen that MC 7700x combo drop to $350 for a few hours a week or so ago. Not living near a store stung when that popped on screen!

You know what I find most interesting about this 5800x3D discussion? No one has posted a new deal for the 7700x which is ALSO $295 after $50 off right now at NewEgg (no, I am not going to do that via the phone here). Happy Tuesday to anyone who wants some rep (link below). Of.course, that requires the upgrade to the AM5 platform, but it is the lowest price on that chip in quite some time on NewEgg.

I'm on the fence about replacing my 3900x with this vs waiting a couple of years and getting a newer cpu+mobo+DDR5. This is a great deal, but I'm thinking I'll do the latter.
Same boat as you, I also have a 3900X that I am thinking about replacing, but I'd need a new motherboard and at that point I feel like I might as well spend a bit more and get an AM5 board and a 7000 series CPU, but at the same time I don't think I do enough gaming these days to justify spending much on high end upgrades.

While these chips have indeed never been marketed as or allowed to overclock, I highly recommend looking into undervolting using the PBO2 Tuner app, or your motherboard -- though most BIOS don't support reducing per-core voltage for this chip.

Most 5800x3d are "good silicon" and can run -25 to -30 undervolt on all cores, reducing voltage by ~0.1v. Not only does this result in notably less heat output, but the extra heat headroom allows the chip to consistently boost all cores to 4.45ghz when needed, which is much better than my 5900x could do.

And as I mentioned BIOS above, be sure to update to the latest BIOS for your motherboard, since 5800x3d is a relatively new chip and most boards probably have a new BIOS which better supports it.
