They're good products but Apple deserves the ridicule for the memory stinginess.

For anybody in the pasco area of Florida. Pawn max on us 19, port Richey has this air used with 20 battery cycles for $550. Saw this yesterday was tempted but already had the 14" m1 pro

I've used an M1 Air with 8GB for almost four years now. I am amazed at how well it handled an average workload.

8gb is enough for a single browser tab. Don't even think about multitasking.
Funny how 8GB is enough for way more than that with my base spec 2014 Mac Mini (though running through an external SSD via USB instead of the deplorable internal spinny drive that had slowed it to a crawl). Even the lowliest M2 Air will bury a ten year old Mini, 8GB is plenty for general use.

Lots of people comment on the low specs (RAM)… Their OS doesn't need the equivalent of a windows system…It just works.

As long as by "a bit more" you mean nearly twice as much for a Pro. Also not quite getting why it is you point out "2 years old", insinuating that it's a bad thing, and then you recommend instead something that is 3 years old.

Used will be cheaper but that going with that course comes with its own set of risks.

The real issue is that the M3 version is only $100 more and you'll get that extra year out of it before it's EOL'd, if you even have it that long.
An M1 Pro 14" can be had for almost the same price as the Air. New, they were nearly twice the price, but used, they've settled to be not much more expensive. I just bought a 16" M1 Pro for $1000, the 14"s were around $8-900.

See the first and second sentences from the post you're responding to. Don't know how to make it more clear than that.

And here's another thing, which is that many don't want a Pro because they are heavier to lug around... I'm not one of those people but I've had friends over the years flat out reject Pros, or even the larger Pro of a given gen vs the smaller version, because of the extra pound.. Or since you're comparing a 13.6" Air to a 16" Pro, call it TWO pounds.

Since any Apple silicon based CPU is largely identical (from a feature-set pov), chances are they'll be supported the same duration. And yes, used vs new is always a point. And finally, yes, the Air is lighter, obvs.

For us, we got both. I got my son a "new" 15" M3 Air (Amazon return with 4 charge cycles) for $800, and myself a BestBuy refurb 16" M1 Pro with 60 cycles for $1000.

Mine's 60% faster GPU, slightly slower single core, slightly faster multicore. I get more RAM&storage, a bigger screen and ports, he gets lighter and more portable.

Good alternative to this!

My HP is having hinge issues. It is now affecting the power button. I'm this close to getting a MacBook. I'm never buying consumer level Windows PCs anymore. Enterprise Windows PCs or MacBooks moving forward.

thankful for best buy plus membership... allowed me to use the 8GB ram model... returned it... dunno how casual you have to be for 8GB to be okay.. but yikes... was not a good machine.
