$800 for a new Macbook air, probably won't last long. Seems the deal from last week for $100 off and next weeks student deal for $100 off are currently stacking.

Best Price for a macbook air, next best is $900 from the apple store with free airpods for education discount as well.

From what I understand, there is NO upgrading on this laptop, whatsoever.

If you want more storage, you will have to use an external drive.

Edit: you could also use Cloud services for storage, if that works for you.

New mac has everything soldered on board which doesn't allow you to upgrade the laptop but external ssd for storage works great.

Both. I bought one last night online. I went into the store today and bought another.

Both. I purchased one online last night and bought a 2nd in the store today. The 2nd one needed my 2nd account for the Student code they scanned at the store.

Yes, the M1 is fast

Yes, but if you want to be more efficient, MacBook Pro is recommended. But as a 4K editing machine, MacBook air can basically meet the demand

Got my first son a MacBook Pro when he started college back in 2013. He still uses it now for work (4 years of school + 4 years at work). The longevity of the laptop makes it worth the price. Our second son wanted a Windows (Dell laptop) and it lasted 2 years at school. He's now already asking for a new laptop for back to school semester.

Going to wait for the new redesign coming up.
The new redesign is for the bigger MacBook Pros, not the Air or the 13" MBP. This model will probably be the latest MBA until next spring/summer.

Also, this is $100 less than Apple's educational store, and $98 above the lowest open-box model at BB.

Also bought this on the B&H deal earlier this year, so far it's been an amazing device. Agreed that these have a longer life-span than windows machines. I upgraded from a 2013 MBA that still ran just fine.

My only gripe on with the M1 powered macbook /macmini machines is the lack of HiDPI support for external monitors. When I hook my M1 Air up to my Dell U2502D QHD monitor, the images and text don't render well. This issue is well reported on and for some reason hasn't been addressed by Apple yet.
Didn't realize that was an issue since I rarely hook it up to a monitor. Also, my 24in Samsung is pushing 9 years so not a HiDPI monitor.

I have the 10% back at Best Buy on no fee United Gateway card. Just a heads up that the T&C says max cash back is $35. So more like 4% back. Maybe the limit is higher on other chase cards but I'm assuming the offer is standard across all cards.

Forgot to add, battery life on this MBA is amazing. 6 to 8 hours per charge consistently. This was the most impressive thing about this laptop.

Would this be good for college in IT courses? Probably would need to run VM software on it.

I'm so confused. Tons of people are saying the 8gb is more than enough and then tons of people are saying 16gb minimum is necessary. Is this an apple vs windows fight or will I have issues running this as a teacher in a classroom with tons of tabs open and lots of multitasking? I have a desktop that can handle all of my editing and gaming so how big of a difference does the extra 8gb honestly make. (I'd love to hear from people who have owned both versions of the air if any are out there)

I don't own one but from what I understand the way the new M1 processor uses RAM is different, so 8 is probably enough for casual use settings.

yeah lot of people realize too late that 8gb is not enough
You need to realize this all changed with the new m1 chip. Difference between 8 and 16 gb is negligible in terms of performance unless you're doing 4k video editing or more intense.
