Why don't they just mark it down to $600 and clear out these old inventory? It's 2 year old tech + however long Apple spent on development and testing before releasing it to market.

Never will happen. Apple won't allow that to eat into its own profit
$750 with a Best Buy "student" deal that required no verification
There was a week or so in 2020 where you could get it for $700 with student discount coupon at BB. My friend bought one last day of sale and said it was the best deal/laptop he'd ever bought. I got mine for around $750 after stacking gift card deals with the Apple Student pricing back in 2020. This is an amazing laptop and nobody should be worried about it only having 8gb of ram, unless you're heavy into photoshop and video editing.
You can also find them used like new on FB and Craigslist for like $600-650. I got an m2 with AC+ for $850 with only 12 battery cycles.

Ordered 1 with trade in old MBA 2015 for $100, so $700 + tax, not too bad. good for another 7-8 years I hope
That trade in value seems low. I got 400 for a 2015 MacBook last year in FB marketplace and then purchased a like new 2 battery cycles m1 for 800 dollars which had an additional 3 year apple plan .

The M1 chip consistently outperforms the newer M2. Go figure, but it's still very relevant, current tech.
For anyone wondering, that's false. Per-core, the M2 is a bit faster than the M1 chip, perhaps 10-20% depending on what, and the GPU is similarly a bit faster too, 10-20% faster per GPU core.
