Perfect timing is right. I've been piecing together my home theater and needed a solid 9.2 receiver. Was contemplating this vs the RZ50. For my purposes the RZ50 is overkill and the 7100 is much less in price. Thanks OP! Purchased!

I only need 7 channels, but at this price I bit. My old Onkyo has been trash, but I've decided to give them another chance

I believe the x305 is the one that compares to this one. I just bought the x505 as there were some benefits over this one that made it seem worth the extra $100. I can't recall off the top of my head but if you do a comparison the x505 is a stronger receiver, for me at least
How much did you get the x505 for?

I was waiting on a Denon S970h deal for $350 to come around for a 5.1 setup. Should I just bite the bullet and get this Onkyo NR7100 for the DIRAC upgrade? Would you guys say this is a significant enough upgrade for a $200 difference?

I bought this last time it was on sale at this price along with a Klipsch RP 5.0 kit (8000F/600M/504C). I bought the RP-1400SW when it went on sale for $700 a few weeks later. It is my first true home theater system so I don't have a much experience but it sounds FANTASTIC!!!!

Sorry I went by what you did say:
"I just added 2 more Atmos speakers to my existing 5.2.2 to make it a 5.2.4"

I get sound is subjective but that soundbar coming close, there is something definitely amiss!

A properly implemented 7.2.4 traditional setup in no way should be close!
Especially when often a soundbar plays streamed content which is a major drop off in quality also.

A soundbar isn't even designed to compete with a traditional setup!
That was my thought/experience exactly before hearing this Q990C, especially Samsung soundbar systems. However, after seeing a couple audiophile reviews (one being Andrew Robinson on YouTube) I decided to give it a try and was really amazed the quality I was hearing, especially the Atmos effects.

As you mentioned, sound is very subjective but soundbars have definitely improved and getting closer to our AVR systems. I have no idea sales figures between full hifi systems and soundbars currently, but I figure the latter is more popular with the masses and may draw the attention of audio enthusiasts like us in this thread to take a look. With the ease of installation and the quality now being put into systems like the Q990C, Sonos, Nakamichi and Sony, that closing of the sound quality gap at vastly reduced costs and convenience, I'm just saying soundbars maybe legit consideration today and in the future.

With all the quality control problems and mediocre performance in the past, I thought I would never buy an Onkyo for myself and have always been a Yamaha person. The Onkyo RZ-50 changed my view on that. Not sure if the 7100 has a 3 year warranty as well, but so far I'm impressed with the RZ-50, which based on reviews so far, the 7100 is just as impressive, just with a little less features and power. I think at this price it's a no brainer to try.

Double check your settings prior to running Dirac.
Dirac Live does not offer their sub/bass management RC(DLBC).
I just run as is, but I do notice a difference for some reason. I'm going to recalibrate soon and run it again soon

So are you happy with the set up? I have older JBLs that have been running Onkyos, but my latest receiver just lost the power to the subwoofer. Debating if I should replace the receiver with this Onkyo.
Oh yeah love it. I have some monoprice ceiling speakers as well for Atmos.

I am coming from a Yamaha HTR-7065 that is recently having issues waking / connecting to the speakers.
It is a random bug that requires power cycling and is just annoying.
I do like the sound profile it produces though.
Better than past Sony / Tecnics receivers I had used.
Onkyo is new to me though; good to hear your experience has been good.

I am strongly considering retiring my Yamaha HTR-7065 and picking this up.
I mainly use it for PS5 gaming + watching movies / shows via my Apple TV.
I've started to get random failures to wake / connect to the speakers which is only fixable by power cycling.
I also had an issue playing FFVII Remake where my TV (LG OLED CX) would crash during heavy action scenes.
A FW update to the TV fixed that, but I'd likely just hook up my PS5 to the Onkyo directly whereas I currently have to hook it up to my TV.

From what I've seen in this thread and online, people tend to prefer Onkyo receivers lately.
I certainly do like how my Yamaha makes my speakers sound, but maybe I need to consider that a lot of people prefer the sound that Onkyo receivers produce.

For sure though, the deal itself is pretty great, right?
