If you are still rocking an AM4 AMD motherboard for a few more years and have some DDR4 ram you like this is an amazing upgrade on a budget.
This is also $5 cheaper than a Front-Page deal from 2 months ago.
To use this coupon code you have to be a Newegg+ member but it is free right now and you can join in 1 minute and then use this.
Just make sure you backup your harddrive, take a look at settings in your BIOS and make sure the BIOS you are on can run this. I would upgrade to your latest BIOS but that is just me.
This is 12 core and 24 threads in a socket platform that has been out since 2016!
Model: AMD - Ryzen 9 5900X 4th Gen 12-core, 24-threads Unlocked Desktop Processor Without Cooler

Check the performance for your intended use case. For example, gaming, almost no difference from 5600X to 5900X.
But for workstation work it can be 2x as fast. https://www.techpowerup.com/revie...0x/22.html
Man so tempting. I still have to wait….. this is almost 250…. If this ever drops to about 200 I will be forced to get it lol

True, I said in the post this is for someone that has DDR4 memory they like, a motherboard that can just do a BIOS upgrade and run this. And they don't want to upgrade CPU,MB and Mem for around $600. For less than half that they can have 12 cores and 24 threads which should keep them happy for several years. The 5800X is on sale as well and they may like that more.
I agree with almost everything you said but Am 4 is not almost dead.. they literally just announced new skus, granted they are dead at being the best amd CPUs around and those new skus are China exclusive(?) but am4 isn't almost dead. I have this CPU and it works very well as a workstation and gaming, I haven't tried to play a game that doesn't doesn't do 100 fps at wqhd with a 6800xt. I don't think I will need to upgrade for at least 3 years
You'll only "damage" it if you over volt the thing.
If you don't know what you're doing, best to stay clear anyways.
Can get another 10 to 15% performance boost with OCing the 5900x.
All cores @4.6ghz spanks the default "max boost" that random cores drive up to.
TBH, I've tinkered with PBO on the 5900x probably 25 times and I've still yet to beat my benchmark results testing with my all core @4.6.
Undervolted done right, it rarely hits 100 watts in gaming. Very efficient chip set.
The problem with that is there's no way to limit power consumption in extreme workloads. Try running y-cruncher or similar stress tests and you'll see insane power consumption and temps. Not good for the CPU or VRMs either. For most people I suggest sticking to PBO.
I'd lean toward the 5900x. It's got 2x the cache size of the 5800x. The 5800x3d has 96mb, vs the 5900x 64mb. Giving up 32mb of cache for 8 extra threads seems like a no brainer. I run this with a 3080 and I don't see replacing it for many more years.
Depends. If you have at LEAST a 7900GRE or RTX4070-Ti, the 5700x3D is a bit faster for pure gaming, but if you have something like a 6800XT or RTX4080, the gaming difference won't be that big, so might as well get more cores which are more useful for non-gaming stuff.
