This 8gb M1 is more than capable to handle the tasks of 99% of users. I run multiple tabs of chrome, imessage, spotify, ableton etc etc etc, all at the same time. Look online and you'll see the same experience. Definitely a good buy at this price.

This has the big bezels around the screen. The M2 has the thinner bezels with a slightly larger screen and a bunch of additional benefits like better camera, better audio, brighter screen, etc.

I'm using an M2 Mac Mini with 8gb RAM connected to a 12tb external hard drive to run 3 servers (Plex,Emby, VLC) without a hiccup. It's Been running continuously for almost 2 years. I previously had a 2018 mini pc i7 with 32gb ram that crashed every month and would bog down even just using Plex. Don't believe all the "8gb ram limitation" jargon.. this computer is a workhorse.

I see people say this a lot, haven't seen one person who's actually owned one say this though.
I had one: 8GB Mini 256GB.

It was pretty easy when I was teaching remotely to get the memory to feel the slowdown and then notice it was in the red (via Activity Monitor) especially with using Google Docs. I tried keeping the number of tabs down, but I was always closing something down.

I'm running Plex inside a container on my Proxmox server, only gave it 2 cores, 1gb ram and a 8gb boot drive and passed it the igpu for hardware transcoding. It runs without any problem. Just for comparisson, running 3 services isn't that much of a big deal but the mac is decent for casual web browsing.

Apple Intelligence will likely need 12GB minimum to run efficiently.

M2 also has reduced durability with the thinner bezels. I've read reviews where someone picked up the M2 Mac air the wrong way and damaged the screen.
That person probably always picked their laptop up that way. It should never be picked up by the screen, ever.

Best Buy was selling these earlier this year for $399 but only for 1 day. Walmart needs to knock a few hundred dollars more off before I'll buy this 4 year old 2020 model
That deal lasted a whole 2 minutes.

No. This is a 4 year old platform they keep pushing at a premium even at this price.

For the same price my samsung galaxybook edge is the best buy. I bought a refurbished m1 air 512gb from Amazon for $300 and am very satisfied with it.

Was that a price mistake? $399 for an M1 Air even with 8 GB is a steal. I just bought a refurb (to use as a travel laptop) with low charge cycles for $460 and thought that was a good deal.

I'm using my friend's MacBook exact this model rn and browse 7 tabs with IntelliJ up running nothing and it's slow as hell. Anyone believe "Mac ram management is superior than pc" is biased by apple's marketing policy. Nothing in the world can compensate the difference between 8gb and 16gb, btw I worked for apple's infra team as an engineer before. If your plex crash, guess it's not run on Linux right? Not because it's a pc
IntelliJ (a java-based development environment for Java and other applications) is not a common use of any laptop for most users who are not software developers. I agree with you, i would hate to drive IntelliJ with 8GB or 16GB of RAM for that matter

An 8GB M1 Macbook Air will be MORE than fast enough for most people and way more performant than comparably priced laptops from other manufacturers.

Avoid any MacBook less than 16gb, productivity wise no more than a iPad, casual use wise, no more than a phone
Tell me you've never used a Macbook, without telling me you've never used a Macbook

Based on walmart reviews it's a flip of a coin, though as time goes on the chance of these being used goes up. I'll find out Wednesday...

I picked a few of these up from the microcenter deal for less - these are phenomenal, 8GB has not been an issue

Please don't spend almost $700 on a laptop that only gets updates for another 2-3 years. At this point this is almost e-waste at this price point. It won't even get a kid through college for 4 years. Unless you want to try to get Linux or chrome OS running for updates 🤷
