This 8gb M1 is more than capable to handle the tasks of 99% of users. I run multiple tabs of chrome, imessage, spotify, ableton etc etc etc, all at the same time. Look online and you'll see the same experience. Definitely a good buy at this price.

This has the big bezels around the screen. The M2 has the thinner bezels with a slightly larger screen and a bunch of additional benefits like better camera, better audio, brighter screen, etc.

I'm using an M2 Mac Mini with 8gb RAM connected to a 12tb external hard drive to run 3 servers (Plex,Emby, VLC) without a hiccup. It's Been running continuously for almost 2 years. I previously had a 2018 mini pc i7 with 32gb ram that crashed every month and would bog down even just using Plex. Don't believe all the "8gb ram limitation" jargon.. this computer is a workhorse.

What are you using it for?
Predominanrly Chrome browser (updated to auto-evict sleeping tabs). Occasionally a 3D printer slicer.

it's a "hallway" computer in my home.

Apple intentionally chose to handicap a great piece of silicon in the name of margins.

8gb on a Mac <> 8gb on a PC - they didn't handicap anything. If your machine is struggling with just chrome then you have something else going on and I would recommend taking it to Apple. Like I mentioned in my post, I have chrome with tons of tabs, iMessage, Spotify and Ableton all running at the same time. All of those programs together are way more memory intensive than what you're using and my machine doesn't skip a beat. This is consistent with most users so you likely have some other issue at play.

I just picked up a M2 Air open box from Best Buy last week for $799. If you can find that deal it's definitely worth it for the upgraded screen, processor and design.

As a plus, they gave me $400 to trade in my base m1 iPad Pro.

IntelliJ (a java-based development environment for Java and other applications) is not a common use of any laptop for most users who are not software developers. I agree with you, i would hate to drive IntelliJ with 8GB or 16GB of RAM for that matter

An 8GB M1 Macbook Air will be MORE than fast enough for most people and way more performant than comparably priced laptops from other manufacturers.
This laptop would be a good buy for a software dev student or a scientific major due to its long battery life. Java-based dev environments will suffer, anything AI will also be impacted. Finance/accounting or engineering need Windows environment. Same applies to a corporate/professional use. So - it is a good buy for a high school student, or a personal home laptop (for typical households with simple networks). Anything that has attached storage, network servers, network connected devices (AV or TVs etc.) - I would prefer Microsoft environment.

The day when Apple releases their new MBA with 16gb of ram in the base model is the day that I'll finally try out a mac computer. Charging hundreds of dollars to go from 8gb to 16gb or 256gb ssd to 512gb should be a crime.

These mismatched specs always confuse me. Put a 1600p display on a screen so small you can't see over 1080p, but then only give it 8GB of RAM.

Avoid any MacBook less than 16gb, productivity wise no more than a iPad, casual use wise, no more than a phone
LOL! I have a MacBook Pro M1 with 8Gb of RAM. I can be running two browsers with 15-30 tabs each, Photos, Mail, Messages, Notes, Preview and Contacts all running at the same time and it never misses a beat.

You'll be disappointed with the screen I know I had one but sold it. If you want to buy a MB, get the pro version with the upgraded screen. It's crazy that none of the owners are talking about how bad the screen quality is.
Another thing I see nobody talking about are cracked screens. It seems a lot of people online are complaining that their screens cracked on their own. I was in Walmart the other day and just happened to notice the display for the M1 Macbook Air, and of course the screen was cracked!

As someone who generally loathes Apple and made it 30+ years without buying their products, I broke down and got this for $700 a few months ago.

Two things can be true at once: (1) it works well enough for casual use as spec'd for most people, and (2) it's criminal that 8 GB versions even exist, because simply upping it to 16 GB would massively increase the ceiling of its capabilities at vanishingly small cost to Apple.

I needed something exclusively for casual-ish use while traveling. It can run Photoshop and VS Code and other stuff beyond mindless web browsing without crashing or freezing, so I'm... fine with it.

The sad state of affairs seems to be that even 4 years after its release, it's excruciatingly difficult or impossible to find a Windows laptop with comparable ergonomics, portability, and battery life in this price range. I hate it and I hate Apple for their sociopathic product tiers where the lowest respectable spec (16 GB RAM on a laptop, 8 GB RAM on a tablet) is always like 50% above the price of an entry-level spec that shouldn't be allowed to exist, but it is what it is.

Don't believe the folks that say > 8GB RAM is required for basic use. I just bought an OB iMac 8/256 M3 10GPU 4 USBC ports at $877, and it's absolutely fantastic.

Yes, my M2 Pro mini and my M2 Ultra Studio are faster. Of course. But the iMac is absolutely fantastic, compact, and blazing fast.

I and many others on planet earth completely disagree with this comment that 8GB with this architecture is sufficient.

I'm an actual owner and daily user.
Yeah, I usually have at least a combo of 15 chrome and firefox tabs open due to schoolwork and ppts. Anything more increases the chances of the laptop experiencing severe throttling. Will 8gb suffice for 99% of users? Probably. But it only costs Apple less than $10 to increase the ram size to 16 gb.
Also imessages, spotify, etc seems to be very lightweight programs in terms of ram usage.

Main downside with this model is the old display style. M1 CPU performs well, but the 13" screen is made even more small if you compare it to the updated screen on M2/M3 air (with thinner bezel & camera notch design).

I actually got this for around $500 new recently using a credit card promo, but I should've paid more for an M2/M3 air for the screen. I'll probably sell the M1 on eBay & put the money toward a newer one. The M2 air has been $750 recently, that is the real slick deal.

Glad that's the case for you but when the machine starts swapping (I have the same machine as you) I can definitely feel it, especially when scrolling on memory intensive sites such as YouTube, which can often use more than 2GB per tab on its own. The machine works fine if I use it for basic tasks as you described and restart it once every few days, but anything beyond that and I have to carefully manage opened applications. I still think it's a great machine but let's not kid ourselves... It has performance issues when it starts swapping, just like any other machine would.

M2 also has reduced durability with the thinner bezels. I've read reviews where someone picked up the M2 Mac air the wrong way and damaged the screen.
I own this one and it cracked on me. I left it open over night and when i woke up to use it, the screen mysteriously cracked. I would highly recommend against anyone ever buying this thing....I hope they get sued....
