I am using this same m1 8gb 256gb. It had been working fine for me. Occasional college level coding, then mainly as web browser. It gets the work done but i would suggest get 16gb if it is $100 more. I frequently get swap memory usage as really high. Although i have not seen memory degradation despite multiple read write cycles over 4 years

I sold my M1 and got a M4 and for casual use can barely notice a difference. The M1 was way ahead of its time. I actually prefer the form factor of the M1 as well with the beveled front. With that said, I would recommend shelling out a bit more for at least an M3. Or wait for the M1 to go below 499.
