Good deal at $11.11/TB
Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.
I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

halo, i run this command to test a smaller 1TB hdd first and it will take 30hrs to complete,
$ sudo badblocks -s -v -n -f /dev/sdb
so 18TB will be in 3 weeks? anyway to make it sooner?
From what I understand, badblocks is doing 4 complete read and write cycles on the drive, that is why it takes so long compared to other tools. You can play with the -b and -c switches to try to speed things up, as discussed in the link below, or you can use a different tool. But your speeds are about right, as online sources mention that an 8TB test can take about a week.

More discussion of times with various badblocks configs (switches) here - https://superuser.com/questions/2...-1tb-drive

Some of the above may be helpful. Personally, I run a less thorough test of my drives before adding them into the disk pool. I don't add drives all that often, so I am just doing an initial check to see what's what, and then my pooling software is likely to catch any issues anyway, so it's not a big deal to me. Besides, as I buy larger drives, the time to run badblocks is too damn long IMO.

i give up on the badblocks tool, it won't do 18tb, will try smartctl --health.
hdd not recognized in bios, electric tape trick works fine.

Yup, for drives that have PWDIS, any tape will work. I've used blue painter's tape in a pinch. I eventually just snip the trace/lead on the drive though, as that's much simpler and no worry of tape falling off or someone using the wrong (molded) SATA adapter and melting something down the road.

Wishful thinking but my price point is $150 for this as I'd need 5 for my 1019+ 😫

$175 for 20TB next Xmas maybe?
Are you still waiting?
