FYI, it was $529 before Thanksgiving. If you can hold and wait 😁

the Pioneer is a better model. it has more power and a full set of pre-outs, so that extra cost is pretty small to be able to have that amplifier expandability later on if you need it.

Only thing stopping most from jumping on this is the lack of pre-outs. Big issue long term as you can't just juice it up with external amps.

Arguable. That Pioneer has a global crossover for all channels [avforums.com]and the Onkyo does not.

Speaker setup options are typical with one noteworthy – and problematic – limitation. The crossover to the subwoofer operates globally. That is to say, users can set only one crossover frequency, applying to all speakers set as 'small', whilst all speakers set to 'large' will play full range. The crossover is also limited to a predefined set of widely spaced frequencies: 50, 80, 100, 150 or 200Hz.

The upshot of using a single crossover is that it either limits all crossed over speakers to the crossover appropriate for the weakest link in the chain of speakers defined as 'small', or it calls on the weaker speakers to play beyond their operating range, to keep up with the most capable speakers in the chain.

If you ever hang out on avsforum, the majority of people there downplay external amps any way.
Yep. Unless you're driving some low impedance, low sensitivity speakers, or have a VERY large room and are already turning volume to max, internal amps are usually fine. You'll know if they're not fine. There's no ambiguity. You'll max out the avr's volume, overheat the avr, or actually hear clipping/distortion. External amps make people feel better. I get it. Audio can be a fun hobby and you want all the toys. Lol. It's funny…the same people who want to spend a lot of unnecessary money on external amps are the same people complaining when a mid tier AVR that's "on sale"doesn't have preouts 😂

Global xover isn't an issue. 80hz is the standard xover in home theaters. If someone set their xover to 60hz or 100hz and you secretly changed it to 80hz, they never know the difference.

I am guessing this is the equivalent of the Pioneer LX305 which is also on sale at $549?

Yes. LX305 is the nearly an exact match. One difference is pioneer has global crossover for low end freq, where Onkyo is independent as far as I found out. Had to go with Onkyo since that was important for me. Otherwise very much looking forward for the pioneer.
Pioneer 3 year warranty and Onkyo is 2 if I'm not mistaken

Global crossover is not a big deal as people make out to be. For home theater use you are supposed to keep all your surrounds at 80hz anyways. Most people spending $550 on the AVR are probably going to pair it with cheap non-full range speakers. Let the subwoofer do all the low end stuff at 120hz and below.

Yeah, they are both very similar, but an important feature for me which the Onkyo has and the Pioneer does not is composite/component analog input (with upscaling to HDMI). You'll probably want this if you have any old-school devices such as VHS players and retro retro gaming consoles.

I agree. This is why I would get the 7100 over the 305. I just wish there was more than one digital optical input, since I have more than one older component that does not have HDMI or digital coax, but does have digital optical.

Haven't bought Onkyo in years. Have they finally learned how to make a receiver where the HDMI board doesn't get fried in 2-3 years?
Maybe?

What are you even talking about? Look at the back... Onkyo has more connections for input and same outputs...
