Perfect timing is right. I've been piecing together my home theater and needed a solid 9.2 receiver. Was contemplating this vs the RZ50. For my purposes the RZ50 is overkill and the 7100 is much less in price. Thanks OP! Purchased!

Are you talking about the HDMI board issues on the 2010-2012 Onkyo models?

That was my thought/experience exactly before hearing this Q990C, especially Samsung soundbar systems. However, after seeing a couple audiophile reviews (one being Andrew Robinson on YouTube) I decided to give it a try and was really amazed the quality I was hearing, especially the Atmos effects.

As you mentioned, sound is very subjective but soundbars have definitely improved and getting closer to our AVR systems. I have no idea sales figures between full hifi systems and soundbars currently, but I figure the latter is more popular with the masses and may draw the attention of audio enthusiasts like us in this thread to take a look. With the ease of installation and the quality now being put into systems like the Q990C, Sonos, Nakamichi and Sony, that closing of the sound quality gap at vastly reduced costs and convenience, I'm just saying soundbars maybe legit consideration today and in the future.
If a lot of these receivers were priced more effectively according to what they really offer then the gap wouldn't be that close to a sound bar...inflation has allowed more greed and gave power to the companies instead of giving it to the devices/receivers.. It's like people are paying more for the description of power rather than the actual thing... But the price alludes folks into thinking certain stuff that are sold as higher end when they're not

I just moved from a house into an apartment, brought my hunger ass towers with me, but when I bought my new Samsung tv, I could've gotten the q990c for around $500, and sorta wishing I'd just gone with that option. Wiring in the apartment without being able to bury cables, huge subwoofer & AVR, etc all start to make the sound bar look like an appealing option. And I've always been anti-soundbar, bc I listen to a lot of music on my system.

I am strongly considering retiring my Yamaha HTR-7065 and picking this up.
I mainly use it for PS5 gaming + watching movies / shows via my Apple TV.
I've started to get random failures to wake / connect to the speakers which is only fixable by power cycling.
I also had an issue playing FFVII Remake where my TV (LG OLED CX) would crash during heavy action scenes.
A FW update to the TV fixed that, but I'd likely just hook up my PS5 to the Onkyo directly whereas I currently have to hook it up to my TV.

From what I've seen in this thread and online, people tend to prefer Onkyo receivers lately.
I certainly do like how my Yamaha makes my speakers sound, but maybe I need to consider that a lot of people prefer the sound that Onkyo receivers produce.

For sure though, the deal itself is pretty great, right?
From my experience, if you like the sound of Yamaha you will like these new Onkyo receivers, very similar I find. I like my music on the crisper, brighter side and Yamaha, Onkyo and Klipsch gives me that. Funny enough I was satisfied with the softer & smoother sounds of my dad's JBL speakers and Sansui amplifier and Technics turntable setup back in the 80's, but once I heard that brighter, digital sound of CDs I loved it and bought accordingly.

I know audiophiles hate to hear this but that's why they say sound is subjective and consumer grade audio equipment manufacturers cater for even the wild audio enthusiasts like me 😊

I'm in a house and still haven't hidden my speaker wires for my current 7.2.4 living room setup and when I saw that Slickdeal for $700 for Q990C I decided to try it due to the overwhelming good reviews from people I respect in the field and it's true what they are saying, I guess in the right setup. It really is not on par with my Klipsch setup but it comes really close, a little artifical surround sound sometimes, which is not a bad thing, but I know some people don't like that. I think in a smaller apartment setup it would really shine as I have a medium size living room with slightly vaulted ceilings and the Atmos and wide surround sounds are really strong. Not sure what voodoo Samsung is using on this one as usually their past and lower priced soundbars are crap.

I'm still an AVR setup kinda person and have recommended so in the past to family and friends, but with these better soundbars on the market now, recommend my not so involved audio friends and family these better soundbars. Cut down my involvement significantly with helping them setup or maintain their little home theater systems.

How much did you get the x505 for?
$650, so $700 after tax. Was supposed to be delivered on Thursday but I didn't hear the doorbell. Then they came back yesterday while I was at work. So I went down to local ups and they said they'd hold it but I can't get til Monday.

I was waiting for the nr7100 to get to this price again but the pioneer came up last week and made me consider it and after comparison I decided to spend the extra.

This always pops up with this debate.
The issue is you're combining two different topics, sound quality and how you get that sound quality.
It's apples n oranges comparison.

Traditional setup is mainly speaker based.
Soundbars are mainly technology based.

Ultimately it's either sound quality OR convenience/aesthetics.

Object based soundtracks(Atmos/DTS:X) throws a giant wrench into that mix.

I just run as is, but I do notice a difference for some reason. I'm going to recalibrate soon and run it again soon
Since you mentioned lowered bass just wanted to point out Dirac Live doesn't include their sub/bass management.
You need to set settings(ie crossovers) prior to running it which might be the issue.
