This 8gb M1 is more than capable to handle the tasks of 99% of users. I run multiple tabs of chrome, imessage, spotify, ableton etc etc etc, all at the same time. Look online and you'll see the same experience. Definitely a good buy at this price.

This has the big bezels around the screen. The M2 has the thinner bezels with a slightly larger screen and a bunch of additional benefits like better camera, better audio, brighter screen, etc.

I'm using an M2 Mac Mini with 8gb RAM connected to a 12tb external hard drive to run 3 servers (Plex,Emby, VLC) without a hiccup. It's Been running continuously for almost 2 years. I previously had a 2018 mini pc i7 with 32gb ram that crashed every month and would bog down even just using Plex. Don't believe all the "8gb ram limitation" jargon.. this computer is a workhorse.

Apple Intelligence will likely need 12GB minimum to run efficiently.
M1 is part of the Apple Intelligence certified devices.

I know no one's really talking about much about the other thing about just having 8 gigabytes. It works fine with just a gigabytes as long as that's all you need but once you go over that limit it starts tapping into the SSD as virtual memory and if you do that a lot it accelerates the wear and tear on the SSD. They do have a finite amount of read and writes. Having said that I have used the 8 GB version and the in speed but it is definitely noticeable. Especially after you expend all 8 GB. Having just 8 GB of memory and a tiny 256 GB SSD is a terrible combination. Mainly because the amount of read and writes that single SSD Chip is going to have to go through from virtual memory and normal usage. now if you had a 512 GB version they actually have two SSD chips so it's split load and it's also considerably faster than a single chip 256.

Not even remotely hot. $400-500 maybe, but $650 plus tax? And the 8GB of ram is an issue if you like to open tabs.

Wouldn't it be better to spend $200 more for a refurbished macbook air 15" M2?

Have one of these from a couple years ago, Jesus do I love the thing. As a gamer, and staunch PC lover. This thing is my go to for work communication and classes I'm still working on for grad school.

Quite interesting comparing the hardware specs to the similarly-priced Lenovo Yoga. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/leno...Id=6571366

People that keep saying that 8gb is enough is the reason Apple still sells them

IntelliJ (a java-based development environment for Java and other applications) is not a common use of any laptop for most users who are not software developers. I agree with you, i would hate to drive IntelliJ with 8GB or 16GB of RAM for that matter

An 8GB M1 Macbook Air will be MORE than fast enough for most people and way more performant than comparably priced laptops from other manufacturers.
Here are 3 laptops that will perform better or similar at around the same price tag
With either dedicated GPU , more RAM and all with more storage

M2 also has reduced durability with the thinner bezels. I've read reviews where someone picked up the M2 Mac air the wrong way and damaged the screen.
You would have had to grip it as if you were climbing the side of a mountain. They are all incredibly durable. Dropped, sat on, and handled poorly by friends/family and has survived without any dent or damage. The reviews you've read are flat-out incorrect. The M2 Air is miles ahead of the M1 Air (having owned both).
