It depends, this new UNIFIED MEMORY concept with the super fast SSDs will get you through almost all daily activities. I have 3 google chrome logins with ~15 tabs open on each all the time. 3-4 Safari tabs and work with Notes / Numbers and convert my iPhone videos to MP4 all the time. The system never feels laggy at all. I really mean NEVER

because a handful of people spread rumours on shady websites that the screen "spontaneously cracks" .
There was a guy in the old thread who said he had 2 of them crack. But it was all made up I think , he mentioned apple was asking him to pay for shipping his laptop for service, I can guarantee that Apple will always cover shipping both ways in case you need service.

That's the way to sweeten it.
If you would be adding Applecare+ , do not buy at BestBuy instead call Apple support and ask for the Student Deal on Applecare+ , they are giving 20% off. ~$160+taxes for 3 year coverage.

Been waiting for it to go back to this price. I'm going to use my rewards and also use my Best Buy credit card for an additional 10% back in rewards.

8GB RAM is just too little. But that's all Apple sells at big box stores for the masses. For future-proofing, 16 GB. Storage is secondary, because you can always add external drives.

I returned mine for a wide variety of issues.

I'm being honest. From random crashes to memory warnings to sub-optimal battery life (less than 8 hours new out of the box) to a lot of software compatability issues when running emulation (Big Sur)...

...Wanted to love it.

...Did not.

Maybe I received a bad unit? If not, there are too many issues, hack and workarounds required for someone used to Windows 10 and typical Office and Adobe apps where it becomes an issue.

As it should. But look at your likely swap file use: EEK! 10 GB is common with these. Combined with soldered storage, that does not bode well over time. Since 2016, Apple has made only disposable computers, unlike during Steve Jobs' days.

App bloat will soon follow the adoption of M1/M1X processors. It always does with faster processors. That will make your 8GB even worse.

These entry level M1 laptops, including the Pros that are not really Pros, are like having a Ferrari engine in a Hyundai Elantra.

Windows to Mac transition unfortunately takes time .. I still screw up on the shortcuts frequently. But the amount of shortcuts with MacOS is amazing (if you lookup solutions on youtube you'll certainly find one easily)
For the battery life and crashes , I'd think you must have been using non-M1 optimized apps, they run through a translation layer Rosetta which converts Intel x86 instruction to a form that M1 can understand. If you jumped in right at launch , it was a common issue but now (specially since July) , almost all apps that I need have a M1 optimized version and the battery life is AMAZING , you can go through 2 full workdays (~15hrs) withouot plugging this in.

I hear you but the swap "issue" was for non-optimized apps running through Rosetta , since July almost all apps that I use are M1 optimized and there are 0 swap or any other issues

For your comment on App Bloat , I was thinking on your lines for 10 years that Apple hardware will age and become useless. But they manage their app ecosystem very very tightly, you can buy a 7 year iPad today and you'll find it's as snappy as the latest one 80% of the time. Apple HARDWARE ages better than ANYTHING ELSE

Odd, I actually love mine. I own an iMac Pro and i feel like this Air (with 8GB memory) runs large Excel and PowerPoint files faster than my iMac.

People need to stop fear mongering on memory swap thing. That has been pretty much fixed and people who actually use this laptop dont complain this anymore.
