There was a guy in the old thread who said he had 2 of them crack. But it was all made up I think , he mentioned apple was asking him to pay for shipping his laptop for service, I can guarantee that Apple will always cover shipping both ways in case you need service.
If you would be adding Applecare+ , do not buy at BestBuy instead call Apple support and ask for the Student Deal on Applecare+ , they are giving 20% off. ~$160+taxes for 3 year coverage.

I do need to say it was surprisingly that Apple gave me $80 of gift card for that. Product from any other company that was released from 2013 would be junk and worth nothing.
But I do know people who still use 2nd gen iPad and find it usable
And as you said there's no other brand that ages so good
I bought the new M1 Air a few weeks back, lowest end 8gb/256gb model like this one. It is super. It replaced a 2019 i5 Pro and beats it in every respect except 1 (the screen is not quite as bright as the Pro, which is noticeable in very bright conditions such as being outside):
Faster
WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY (did I say WAY) better keyboard
Physical escape key (I know some liked it, I found the Touch Bar a complete waste)
Silent
Runs cool
Virtually instant start from sleep or when opening the screen
Battery life
Just an all around great laptop and in my case well worth the "supposed downgrade" from a Pro to an Air. In fact, the new Pro did not really entice me because it still includes the Touch Bar.
I sold my old Pro for $650, bought this new Air for $850 or so with tax and could not be happier with the $200 spend. It is WELL worth the $750 current price (or even $1000 in my opinion).
Half of the time student in college that do require certain applications, those applications are only on windows anyways.

Do you get paid to shit on Apple? You get the most negative rating for your comments everywhere.
Swap usage is fixed in the latest macOS.
10GB per day swap usage still will last a 256GB SSD over 80 years!!!
SSDs lifespan is usually ranges 150TBW-1500TBW from a basic SSD to an expensive SSD.
Those reports of excessive SSD usage point to Apple using higher end 1500TBW SSD.
Let's assume Apple Mac SSD is a little better than basic at 300TBW(~1000 writes) for a 256GB SSD.
10GB per day = 0.3TB per month = 83 years.
30GB per day = 1TB per month = 25 years.
100GB per day(highly unlikely unless buggy apps or maybe heavy Rosetta apps) = 8.3 years.
I chose a very conservative 300TBW. Actual maybe 2x or 4x. So even with high SSD usage you will get a minimum of 10 years.
For an average to moderate user, including software dev, definitely go with 8GB/256GB.
For Professional Video Editing, go with 16GB/512GB.
I bought the laptop with the last deal and so Best Buy does not show the offer on that account anymore. I can still see it in other accounts. Some people had issues in the app so try a desktop/mobile browser instead.
