Many people who buy these shuck them, taking the drive out to install in a NAS or server.
Regardless, if you do not know what what you would use it for then you do not need it.

I've never had a problem getting an RMA on a shucked drive without the enclosure, 2 clients had to fight a little, but if you're worried just save the enclosure and put it back in before sending it off for an RMA.
I had a Buick Regal that was a terrible car, but I've heard stories of others that were fine. I didn't go around impuning the name of every Regal on the road just because my experience was a poor one. There are plenty of stories about people who got warranty service on their WD drives and we fully have the internet now unlike when i had my Regal. There's no excuse to present limited experience as absolute fact (even when it's yours) to unsuspecting strangers here when you can read online quite readily about other experiences that differ from yours. It's a lazy and selfish way to operate and it casts doubt on any future statements you make IMO.
We should all be responsible for putting the most credible information we can in forums meant to help others. Even if we have our own experiences with a product, they should be mentioned in combination with the experience of others at large, not presented as fact in isolation.
