It depends, this new UNIFIED MEMORY concept with the super fast SSDs will get you through almost all daily activities. I have 3 google chrome logins with ~15 tabs open on each all the time. 3-4 Safari tabs and work with Notes / Numbers and convert my iPhone videos to MP4 all the time. The system never feels laggy at all. I really mean NEVER

because a handful of people spread rumours on shady websites that the screen "spontaneously cracks" .
There was a guy in the old thread who said he had 2 of them crack. But it was all made up I think , he mentioned apple was asking him to pay for shipping his laptop for service, I can guarantee that Apple will always cover shipping both ways in case you need service.

That's the way to sweeten it.
If you would be adding Applecare+ , do not buy at BestBuy instead call Apple support and ask for the Student Deal on Applecare+ , they are giving 20% off. ~$160+taxes for 3 year coverage.

Bought this a couple weeks ago when it was $799 with student deal. Anyone had any luck getting BestBuy to price match themselves now that it's $749?

This was my experience too. Returned but not from previous deal. Was prepared to be blown away but was extremely frustrated by how limiting the OS felt overall. There is no 1:1 mapping for a lot of things Windows does amazingly well and on which I completely depend.
I'm sure Mac OS does a lot of other things better than Windows but well I have lived my life without it so I can keep going on.

Mind you I'm not anti-Apple as I'm completely into Apple ecosystem except Mac. My Surface Pro7 might have shit battery but it is still holding up very well in terms of performance and works brilliantly with my 2-monitor setup without any DisplayLink workaround dongles.
I tried my first Mac 2 years ago and gave up on it as I was very comfortable with windows.
This time I gave it a little time and watched snazzylabs YouTube tutorial on Mac, I think I love MacOS now ..
And I feel you may have tested Waters too soon when apps were not optimized for M1

Regarding your use case of using the MBA with a 2 monitor desktop setup, Mac Mini would be more suited for it.

Probably not.. during the last deal they turned down such requests. But do try it as I remember one report of success but I think that was in store thru a manager

No student ID needed
Apple has sold millions of this and there are probably six stories of screen cracking online with no proof. I bought AppleCare+ and have been really harsh and carefree with my screen but no issues yet

AppleCare+ is only 160+tax if you call apple and request the student deal. It covers all accidental damage for 3 years and I think I'll get a new battery for sure unless apple has done some battery magic and they keep their capacity above 80% even after 3 years

You mean you can sign up for a best buy student account without any verification? Do you need an edu email?

I have the 16GB ram version of this and it's a beast of a computer. Not only do I get battery life so good that I don't worry about it anymore but it is the fastest computer I have ever seen. I also have a gaming laptop, high end intel windows box, and a top of the line intel MacBook Pro and this little thing runs circles around them all.

according to last batch of people ordered the deal, many returned the macbook. hard pass
Not sure why they would do that..literally the best laptop I've ever owned out of about 10 laptops, including my older 2012 MacBook Pro…the M1 is a beast, and battery lasts forever

i agree it's hard to believe.
But the real question is have you tried macOS with an open mind? It's different and will take time to adapt. But it's been built by people who are obsessive about user experience (a little too much)

Windows 10 is headed in the right direction but with the hardware advantage and the massive developer support in favor of Mac/Apple, I'm very happy that I switched.
