It's not left over stock, it's a strategic move between Apple and Walmart: https://corporate.walmart.com/new...ts-shelves

It's not $750. It's $900 w/ a $150 gift card. There's a difference.

Y'all acting like this laptop is paperweight just because it's 3 years old. Name a $700 Windows laptop that can match this in build quality and battery life...

How does it compare to the one at Costco for $650?

$150 and a $150 Apple gift card aren't the same thing at all. The easiest way to see this is to try to sell your gift card. You'll get around $110 from cardcash.com.

I own a Mac Air and previously owned a Pro. I've never bought any other Apple products and don't intend to either. Money has a time value, and I'm not interested in giving Apple my money today for a credit when I buy a new laptop in a year or two.
OK, but most people are not like that. Most people will end up buying an iPad, or an iPhone, or something else later. I don't wanna be mean, but your a small majority.

Also think of it like this: 900$ MacBook + free AirPods

Just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro Retina 13.3-inch (2018) - Core i5 16GB - SSD 512GB for my highschooler from a reputed seller via Back Market (paid $399). Wondering which one is a better buy...can someone please chime in

Speaking of iPhone, where can I buy an iPhone with iOS 13 for no more than $150. I need one for Japan.

Apple typically stops providing major software updates at 7 years.
The computer you bought is already at 6.

I also wouldn't buy any intel chip at this point for a Mac. Apple has moved on to its own custom chip now that provides massive improvements in performance , battery life, and efficiency.

Also wouldn't be eligible for Apple Care which I consider a necessity.

If your absolute only hard constraint is cost you made a perfectly fine purchase.

But by any other metric at all this would be a better purchase for your kid to be able to get through the first half of college with.

I'd argue that the main issue is having only 8GB of RAM in 2024.
This is a laptop for general use, 8GB is fine on MacOS unless you are doing creative work.

ASUS Zenbook 14X: i7 13700H, 14.5" 2.8K OLED Touch, 16GB RAM
$700.

Now name an Apple laptop released in the past year that matches those specs for $700.
ASUS laptops will last maybe a year before it kicks the can

The battery is likely degraded being discharged for that long?

If you're on the fence about getting an almost 3-year-old laptop, the Apple Education Store has the M2 MBA for $899. And since it's through Apple, you can upgrade RAM, processors, and SSD. No need to actually prove you're a student, and you get these upgrades from the M1:
  • Updated body
  • 13.6" screen vs. 13.3"
  • 500 nits brightness vs. 400
  • 1080p camera vs. 720p
  • Support for fast charging and MagSafe
  • 1-1/2 more years before Apple drops support
  • More here [macrumors.com]

Nice pick. I stand corrected. I would pick this Zenbook myself if I had to choose, but to be 100% fair, I do have to mention it's cons as well:

- Unless it throttles very, very heavily, there is absolutely no chance in hell that a laptop with a H-series i7 and an OLED panel has more battery life than M1 + IPS. It's a common misconception that OLED is more efficient compared to LCD because it turns off black pixels - it really isn't, and this is well documented, particularly on laptops where you can choose between IPS and OLED and everything else is equal, like in some ThinkPads

- The M1 is one of the very few laptops that can run at maximum performance without needing to be plugged in. No Windows laptop that isn't ultra-low spec can claim the same.

- Speakers and touchpad. Macbooks are still #1 on both. A non-insignificant number of reviews also mention a creaky plastic hinge, so I'd throw build quality in there as well.

- This last point is just nitpicking since very few people are affected by this, but it's still a valid point: even though the OLED is eye candy, it can be unusable for PWM-sensitive folk. And you can have issues with the nonstandard subpixel layouts of OLED (Windows ClearType is designed specifically for RGB).

The Zenbook weighs 3.48lb vs. 2.8lb of this MBA, but the larger screen of 14.5" vs. MBA 13.3" is probably the main factor. Not necessarily a pro/con per se, but just due to slightly different form. The OLED screen is amazing and indeed eye candy. However, for those who are bothered by the subpixel issue, the Zenbook will not be for them.

MBA clearly wins on battery life. That being said, Zenbook battery should last a full day, around 6-8 hours, on normal use depending on screen setting (120hz or 60hz refresh rate and brightness) and power balance. Think people were reporting 4 ish hours running on full torch mode. Out of curiosity, do most people get "up to 18 hours" on MBA normal use with web browsing and watching videos?

No. Typically opened by someone and returned. Bestbuy has a 14 day return policy so likely very little use and apple care likely in tact. IMO, I won't be surprised if these were still new and shrink wrapped removed since they are warehouse shipped. Apple has to dump all the sitting m1s somewhere since they refuse to do markdowns.
Pure speculation, though. It could also be that someone dropped it and wanted to return it within the return window.
