I own a Mac Air and previously owned a Pro. I've never bought any other Apple products and don't intend to either. Money has a time value, and I'm not interested in giving Apple my money today for a credit when I buy a new laptop in a year or two.
Also think of it like this: 900$ MacBook + free AirPods

The computer you bought is already at 6.
I also wouldn't buy any intel chip at this point for a Mac. Apple has moved on to its own custom chip now that provides massive improvements in performance , battery life, and efficiency.
Also wouldn't be eligible for Apple Care which I consider a necessity.
If your absolute only hard constraint is cost you made a perfectly fine purchase.
But by any other metric at all this would be a better purchase for your kid to be able to get through the first half of college with.

$700.
Now name an Apple laptop released in the past year that matches those specs for $700.

- Unless it throttles very, very heavily, there is absolutely no chance in hell that a laptop with a H-series i7 and an OLED panel has more battery life than M1 + IPS. It's a common misconception that OLED is more efficient compared to LCD because it turns off black pixels - it really isn't, and this is well documented, particularly on laptops where you can choose between IPS and OLED and everything else is equal, like in some ThinkPads
- The M1 is one of the very few laptops that can run at maximum performance without needing to be plugged in. No Windows laptop that isn't ultra-low spec can claim the same.
- Speakers and touchpad. Macbooks are still #1 on both. A non-insignificant number of reviews also mention a creaky plastic hinge, so I'd throw build quality in there as well.
- This last point is just nitpicking since very few people are affected by this, but it's still a valid point: even though the OLED is eye candy, it can be unusable for PWM-sensitive folk. And you can have issues with the nonstandard subpixel layouts of OLED (Windows ClearType is designed specifically for RGB).

MBA clearly wins on battery life. That being said, Zenbook battery should last a full day, around 6-8 hours, on normal use depending on screen setting (120hz or 60hz refresh rate and brightness) and power balance. Think people were reporting 4 ish hours running on full torch mode. Out of curiosity, do most people get "up to 18 hours" on MBA normal use with web browsing and watching videos?
