It's not left over stock, it's a strategic move between Apple and Walmart: https://corporate.walmart.com/new...ts-shelves

It's not $750. It's $900 w/ a $150 gift card. There's a difference.

Y'all acting like this laptop is paperweight just because it's 3 years old. Name a $700 Windows laptop that can match this in build quality and battery life...

I'm skipping M1 and M2 macbook's due to new release article that an unpatchable vulnerability has been discovered in Apple's M1- M2 series chips that allows attackers to extract secret encryption keys from Macs under certain conditions, according to a newly published academic research paper (via ArsTechnica), i'll wait for M3 MacBook air later this year to go on sale, good to luck to those who ordered.
The M3 is also affected in this security issue. The difference is they think they can stop it on the M3 but are unsure of the performance hit yet.

These were originally launched in November 2020, so the design is 3 1/2 years old. Great computers but worth bearing the model age in mind when deciding whether to buy
My 2016 MacBook which I purchased for $750 at that time still looks and work as good as new! So 2020 at $699 is no brainer.

Yes, depending upon your use case. 8GB on MacOS runs similar to 16GB on a comparable Windows 11 PC, imo.
8 GB on MacOS is better than 8 GB on Windows, but it's not nearly as good as 16 GB on Windows.

For you, totally understandable. for 95% of the population? an excellent value.
You mean buyers not population. I bet Walmart buyers are not in the market for MacBooks

What's the point of saying this? It's not than Windows machines in that price range are obsolete. My Dell AIO Desktop is getting updated with Windows 11, it has 16gb RAM and 256GB SSD, paid $365. Purchased it in 2014, can you beat it? And can you imagine, it's user serviceable and upgradable, touchscreen is a added bonus.

But do I think this MacBook is not a good value? Absolutely not, it's a very good value. Most people won't need more than 8GB of RAM. And this includes me. But let's not forget the fact that Apple is using a base model as a decoy to get people spend another $200 for RAM and $200 for additional SSD upgrade. This is nothing but a power play and f word to its customers. More RAM does nothing but makes the system snappier and faster. Right now my Dell PC (with two actively used profiles) sitting at 62% out of 16Gb of RAM. And these are all Chrome tabs.

In other worlds, Apple should absolutely include minimum of 12GB of RAM. But I know it won't happen, and we all know why

M3 is affected too. Nobody knows yet how it's going to affect the performance of M1-M3. It can only be fixed via software, no hardware fix is possible. We have to wait to see what happens

Just keep in mind, it's not just a 2 generation old processor, but also the older body style.

You can get a refurb m2 for $849 from apple, which will get you the newest redesigned body.

And the latest m3 costs $1099.

Personally I'd go with the apple-refurb m2 minimum, just from the standpoint that it looks more modern, has a faster chip, and will probably maintain its resale value better.

There is not much feature addition with latest m3. No need to get the latest one and shed additional 600 + tax

If it's 699 at Walmart, I expect 599 for New at some retailer to be a real deal!

Is this going to be a computer you can't update the OS on in a few years?
My brother has an older one of these and he can no longer update the OS, which will end up being a problem soon, as it makes the computer less secure.

If you wait till June Apple Back to school sale with happen, and M2 MacBook Air will be 750$

They ask for no verification that you are an student

It's -100$ of normal price of MacBook and the include 150$ gift card, making the total around 750.
So $900 then a $150 gift card.
Where can you use the giftcard? Is it like a Visa gift card you can use anywhere? Or do you have to use it at Apple stores? (much less valuable then, if you weren't planning on buying anything at Apple).

Don't know about battery life, but there was a deal for HP Elitebook 845 G8 posted on SD recently and the build quality is really nice. Comparable to my 2019 MBP I'd say. Cost only $300.
I'm not a Mac user, but I do know those computers are built well, with very good components. I'm not terribly impressed with HP. I have bought Dell Latitudes mainly for last 15 years, but I'm getting more concerned with how well built those are. I'm not interested in the thinnest, lightest computer. I want one that does what I need, is built well, will last, can be opened and fixed by the owner, and is reliable and doesn't have a lot of problems. I've seen more problems with the Latitudes Dell has produced in last 3 or so years ... Dell, I'm starting to be concerned (although I still like them better than Lenovo or any other Windows option - I've seen more problems with Lenovos).

How much RAM you need depends on how you use the computer.

8 GB is going to be fine for a lot of people.

Maybe not for gamers. Maybe not for people who use programs which work better & faster with a lot of RAM.

But if you surf the internet, use office software (Libre Office, Microsoft office), watch videos, etc., 8 GB will be fine.

If you like to have a lot of browsers & less memory intensive programs open, and switch between them a lot, 8 GB generally still will be fine.

If you keep a lot of browser tabs open, browsers now have a setting that will "sleep" browsers that are not currently being used; that reduces the memory demands from the browser. If you don't turn this on, you can run into memory problems.

It can help to reboot your computer occasionally (set your browser to remember the open tabs if that's important to you).

If you're a gamer, 8 GB may not be enough for you.

My wife has the original M1 air with 256gb storage/8gb of ram. She uses canva, cricut, photoshop, multi-tab chrome, spotify, and a handful of other apps running almost all the time and she's never had issues with lag/unresponsiveness/beach balling.

Like said NUMEROUS times already, if you know you have a need for a laptop with more storage or more memory, get that version. Don't buy a 2 door truck and complain it doesn't have enough seating.

Apple Store gift card, but 99% of people will buy something in the Apple Store yearly.

I don't think you would not buy an iPad iPhone or AirPods in the next few years

Are you always a snob? I have bought over 20 Macs throughout my life and I shop at walmart weekly. Hundreds of thousands of people who shop at walmart are in the market for MacBooks.

You have a limited group of people around you!!
I know plenty of people who would never buy anything from Apple Store, including me. And will not buy an Ipad, Iphone, or Airpods in the next few years. Not everyone is interested in Apple products, or spending lots of money on expensive consumer products.

But, all the best to you!
